I know. I gave up long before Butch was hired, but had a glimmer of hope that all the ones with info were correct and I would wake up with Gruden as coach on Friday.

I was full on Gruden from the start. But the more I think about it and if, huge if, the rumors about salaries and control were right, I support the Jones hire more.

I'm willing to give him a shot and I liked what he said at the PC. I think we can look forward to a pretty decent season. I'm an optimist lol

I got caught up in the sexiness of the possible hire. However, if reports were true that he was concerned about rules an apprehensive about coming here, I did not and do not want him ever.

That part and the give me all or give me nothing mentality are what got me.

What stopped you before?

I went over that with folks a while back..I thought Gruden was the one coach that could unify our fanbase again, so in the interest of harmony I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt. I really beleive that perception is a huge part of success.

His thread sounds like people think he'll end up at Bama.

Yeah I know. That was my point. He must think we botched the hire if that is the case. Or he may have just lost a ton of interest during November that the new hire didn't recoup.

If he is the next up and coming "coach" id say we should expect good things in the future. If we can get him to stick around...

and it will go a long way with fans proving that he can compete with the big boys.

At this poin that is not a fair expectation though. He who will not be named left us so far behind that it will really be a miracle to turn him now. I think there is a chance, I just don't want to burden Butch with that. If he gets Woulward and Green on board that will be huge. And Marquez North too is a good possibility imo.

Does anybody else think we should have gone after Petrino? I heard at one point he had called the AD every day for a week straight to try and get the job. I bet we could have hired him for cheaper than Jones and not given him a buyout of any kind. He was ripe for some lopsided negotiations, and I think he is the only coach we could have gotten that would potentially be a Saban slayer.

No, sure it would have sent shock waves through the SEC but way to big a risk, IMO

No I don't think that is the case. He has been leaning Bama or browneyes for a while now, this one is all on Dooley.

Except Randall Cobb grew up 15 minutes from Neyland Stadium. Bell is in Georgia.

True, but that was more of a reference to Bell holding a grudge and kill UT every chance he got. Cobb was a good player on a bad team. Would of killed to have him at times.

Meh. That's who my father-in-law wanted. I was concerned about his ability to recruit.

But I think you could take most of the risk away by crafting a very lopsided contract. If he wanted back in the SEC, that is the path. We had so much bargaining power over him that I really think it would have been a can't lose situation.

I totally agree. I will NEVER pull for Bama or Florida.

Someone asked me the other day who I was pulling for in the NC game. I regretfully said ND this is after he found out I was a UT fan. Well he proceeded to say, you dont pull for the SEC? I said Hell no, there is no way I will EVER pull for our most hated rival. It would be like kissing your sister and marrying your cousin all in the same afternoon.

He couldn't do it at arky, what makes you think he could do it with us? He had multiple opps at arky and couldn't get it done. I hate Petrino, He never came close to putting a good defense on the field, and rumor is he was never really concerned that much with putting a good D on the field.

That could very well be true, but I really doubt he would take it or at least it seemed that way with everyone else that turned us down.

Looks like Cincy is going to hit the lottery, Tubberville and Petrino.

I don't give a rat's ass what some may say, but UT is a destination job unless your alma matter is your dream school and it opens up. Of course, I am VERY biased.
