In the 1960's (I know, that's ancient history to most of VN) we had a HC, Doug Dickey, who brought excitement to the Hill because he could recruit like crazy. (Getting Richmond Flowers away from Alabama was huge back then.) After a few years, we discovered that he was consistently out-coached in big games, although we thought that UT had better talent. Despite winning two SEC championships, he could never seem to get his teams prepared for bowl games, and we lost those on a regular basis. After losing yet another bowl game in 1969 (Gator Bowl to Florida), he left for Gainsville.

What if Strong is Dickey v 2.0? You guys have convinced me that he can recruit, but I'm not convinced the man can out-coach the likes of Saban and Spurrier just because he's 10-2 in a weak Big Least.

I think that if Gundy can thrive at Okie State, he could easily thrive here at UT. Okie State has been such a mediocre if not poor program for decades and he has them knocking at the door every year now.

On another note, did everyone see that Arkansas that if Chris Peterson declines at Arkansas, that the Hogs will offer their job to James Franklin over Charlie Strong?

Speaks volumes of the man's abilities.

He had them knocking on the door, once. In the big 12. Completely different philosophy in the SEC and from his coaching.

I completely agree with this statement.

What Gundy has done at Okie State is impressive. He has shown that he can coach AND recruit well enough to almost get to a national championship, at a Big 12 school not named Texas or Oklahoma.

If Arky is the gauge for smart decisions in this world we are all screwed. If Arky does it, must be right.

Just don't see us getting Gundy. T Boone won't let it happen. I think he is just lookking for a raise. I could be totally wrong though. Defensively, he brings nothing to the table and doesn't ever seem to have a decent defensive team. We need that here in the SEC. Defense is king.

On the offensive side of the ball, we are currently fine. We need help on defense!

Peterson is a helluva coach, I agree.

You can always hire a top defensive coordinator.

It would not surprise me in the least.

We are learning that there are no insiders when it comes to information from Dave Hart-NONE.

We are learning that Hart is his own man and is able to keep a secret.

And you say Gundy brings nothing to the table on defense...What did DD every bring to the table at all?

We have to stop looking for the "perfect" hire. There are a lot of quality coaches that would have us at least in a UGA type position. (knocking at the door but who knows if we actually get in)

If hired by Dave Hart, I would expect Gundy to bring some of his staff and hire some other staff members with experience recruiting and coaching in the SEC. That would allow himself to have coaches with relationships with high schools in the southeast and in Texas.

If we are considering this group of head coaches then how have they had success already?

I think any of the HC candidates will make a great HC here (except Golden). Who would you like to see as DC when we get a HC? My list
1. Smart
2. Ward
3. Johnson
4. Alloiti

I'd put Chavis at the top, but I don't think he will not come back here.
