the problem with this approach is it would show similar results for almost any coach that ever takes their first job at a low level school b/c either a) they don't play many ranked teams or (b) they are completely outmatched in every facet against the power schools
winning 8 games at vandy and back to back bowl games is an achievement - they had only been to 4 bowls total prior to his arrival
mullen winning at the level he has at Mistate is an achievement - that is a perennial bottom feeder where he has now had 2 really nice seasons in the toughest division of the toughest conference in college football
if you look at meyer he only beat 1 team that ended the year ranked in the top 25 - and that was a #25 Pitt team
he then went on to do very well once he got at a big boy school with big boy resources
now if they are at bama and can't beat ranked opponents thats a different story - if you are at UT with those resources and can't beat a ranked team that is a serious problem
but comparing someones success at Vandy or Mistate to UT is not a valid comparison
So, point blank... because this is the only real question that matters here... is James Franklin the man who can lead Tennessee back to competing for SEC championships?
I'll hang up and listen...
If he can get a top 20 recruiting class at Vandy, he can do wonders at UT. The man knows how to motivate his players, that let's face it, are a lot less talented than the team their playing 75% of the time... I truly believe that Franklin can have UT vastly improved in his first 2 years and competing for SEC championships by year 3.
The problem is your comparing Tenn when its at one of its lowest point talent wise in the last 20 years. You do know yhat DDs first year the only game experience on the oline was 3 games?? Vandy and Tenn have hade very similair talent the last 3 years....smh
I know it's unlikely but Shaw at Stanford would be a good get imo. They're a goal line stand (which I think they got screwed on) & close loss to UW away from being in the NC game. They may have made it even with the early loss to UW. He would probably need to get some assistants who are familiar with the southeast in recruiting though.
