Can't stand the Franklin love any longer. I have so much freaking work to do right now, but I can't resist:
Franklin in two years:
Vs ranked opponents 0-6 (.00)
Vs unranked opponents (14-5) (.64)
Vs teams with winning record 0-10 (.00)
Vs teams 500% 1-0 (1.00)
Dooley in 3 years:
Vs ranked opponents 0-15 (.00)
Vs unranked opponents 15-6 (.60)
Vs teams with winning record 4-20 (.20)
Vs teams 500% (before bowl game) 2-1 (.66)
Why in the name of all that is good and holy are people so adamant about Franklin? Look at the facts people!
Fisher and Fedora would both be awful hires. If that is indeed the list then Strong is the clear choice for me. Would like to see Jim Mora at least approached.
I love the idea of Strong.
Fisher I'm lukewarm on, but I wouldn't be angry.
Can somebody sell me on Fedora? I'm aware of his*time at USM, but I don't know about his potential recruiting and staff.
When I compare he and Strong...Strong's SEC time and Def. background win out.
I could accept Fedora, just need some reasons.
Here's what I've read. Fedora won at Southern Miss and just about everywhere he's been. He is really respected by Florida's AD. He was the OC under Zook there. He was the second choice behind Muschamp (HG may need to confirm this) this last go round. Also was the OC at Okie State and many think if Gundy leaves that he'll be the target for them. He is a good motivator and is a very passionate coach. He interacts well with the fans. My concern is that he brought 6 coaches to UNC from Southern Miss. None of the staff have a reputation as a lights out recruiter. Fedora has won some recruiting battles while at USM against the SEC. He runs a spread but he keeps it balanced. His offense at Okie St had one season where they averaged 243 passing and 243 rushing per game. :hi:
Ok so my cousins husband is John Hunt, former UF and USCjr OL coach. here's how the conversation just went literally minutes ago.
Me: "Hey John just checking your opinion of Charlie strong as a coach, recruiter, and is he ready to run a SEC program?"
John: "First let me say he's a first class individual all the way around. As far as a coach, he's one of the best defensive minds in the business and gets the most out of his players. At UF he was our best recruiter, if there was a player on the fence or if we fell behind on a guy, we'd send Charlie in there to lock it up, he just has a way with relating to kids from all backgrounds. And I definitely believe he can run a SEC program, he's an SEC guy at heart and would thrive if given the opportunity. He's a relentless worker as well, several times he would just sleep at the complex going over game plans or recruiting stuff. I'm a Florida guy so don't like the Vols much but if you have the chance, hire that guy now before he retires at another SEC school."
Never once have I ever posted info claiming to have insider knowledge or sources. But you can believe this one, and I even gave you the name of the source, go look him up if you think I'm not telling the truth. John and Charlie go back farther than coaching.
Hope you guys enjoy the info.
the problem with this approach is it would show similar results for almost any coach that ever takes their first job at a low level school b/c either a) they don't play many ranked teams or (b) they are completely outmatched in every facet against the power schools
winning 8 games at vandy and back to back bowl games is an achievement - they had only been to 4 bowls total prior to his arrival
mullen winning at the level he has at Mistate is an achievement - that is a perennial bottom feeder where he has now had 2 really nice seasons in the toughest division of the toughest conference in college football
if you look at meyer he only beat 1 team that ended the year ranked in the top 25 - and that was a #25 Pitt team
he then went on to do very well once he got at a big boy school with big boy resources
now if they are at bama and can't beat ranked opponents thats a different story - if you are at UT with those resources and can't beat a ranked team that is a serious problem
but comparing someones success at Vandy or Mistate to UT is not a valid comparison
Bobby Johnson had Vandy playing pretty good ball when he retired. Then, they had that joker for one year, and Franklin steps into a job with Johnson's classes left in place. Yes, Franklin has recruited very well for Vandy's level.
And with all due respect, I have posted the stats on the games he has coached, nothing else. To say I can't compare his success with Dooley is ludicrous. I used the exact same measuring stick, and they come up nearly the same, except Dooley actually beat some teams with a winning record.
Franklin might be a good coach, but he has done nothing but create some hype, recruit well, and beat the worst teams on his schedule consistently. That does not put him anywhere within the stratosphere of what Tennessee should be looking at. People seriously underestimate how weak Vandy's strength of schedule is, (65th) and how their earth shattering season came on the back of nobodies.
but no other coaches have taken Vandy to back to back bowl games - and they have consistently played weak schedules - in fact no other coach has taken Vandy to 2 bowl games in a decade
55, 74, 82, 2008 - these were the times Vandy made a bowl prior to his arrival
i don't care if it is against weak teams - Vandy never beat those weak teams in the past so to all of sudden go from maybe making 1 bowl a decade to making 2 in a row is an achievement
on playing weak teams that was kind of my point - all coaches that come from the mistates, vandy's, or lower D1 schools will always have not faced a lot of competition - that doesnt mean they can't coach or won't do very well once given the opportunity to do it a big boy school
