I would have listened to the argument that getting Vandy to consecutive bowl games was an accomplishment worth celebrating 10 or 15 years ago.

To me, it holds no water now that soooo many teams stumble into a bowl. Win 3 or 4 buy games, pick off 2 or 3 conference slugs and you're in.

Now that I type that...damn this year sucked.

the problem with this approach is it would show similar results for almost any coach that ever takes their first job at a low level school b/c either a) they don't play many ranked teams or (b) they are completely outmatched in every facet against the power schools

winning 8 games at vandy and back to back bowl games is an achievement - they had only been to 4 bowls total prior to his arrival

mullen winning at the level he has at Mistate is an achievement - that is a perennial bottom feeder where he has now had 2 really nice seasons in the toughest division of the toughest conference in college football

if you look at meyer he only beat 1 team that ended the year ranked in the top 25 - and that was a #25 Pitt team

he then went on to do very well once he got at a big boy school with big boy resources

now if they are at bama and can't beat ranked opponents thats a different story - if you are at UT with those resources and can't beat a ranked team that is a serious problem

but comparing someones success at Vandy or Mistate to UT is not a valid comparison

The problem is your comparing Tenn when its at one of its lowest point talent wise in the last 20 years. You do know yhat DDs first year the only game experience on the oline was 3 games?? Vandy and Tenn have hade very similair talent the last 3 years....smh

Question:

Sorry to bring back up the Gruden stuff but since it is supposedly dead now can someone who received the Montrell Hardy emails back a month or 2 ago please let the rest of us know what they were about? Curious.

So, point blank... because this is the only real question that matters here... is James Franklin the man who can lead Tennessee back to competing for SEC championships?

I'll hang up and listen...

If he can get a top 20 recruiting class at Vandy, he can do wonders at UT. The man knows how to motivate his players, that let's face it, are a lot less talented than the team their playing 75% of the time... I truly believe that Franklin can have UT vastly improved in his first 2 years and competing for SEC championships by year 3.

I know it's unlikely but Shaw at Stanford would be a good get imo. They're a goal line stand (which I think they got screwed on) & close loss to UW away from being in the NC game. They may have made it even with the early loss to UW. He would probably need to get some assistants who are familiar with the southeast in recruiting though.

Respectfully and wholeheartedly disagree. We will never know. Maybe, his next job he will show something, but for now, no evidence for me. :hi:

TN has far more highly rated kids on its roster so that is just not true (4 star or higher) - the NFL also disagrees with you - Vandy has 1 kid projected to go in the draft - jordan matthews in the 3-4 round

TN has 5 - 4 projected in 2nd (could have a couple 1sts) and 1 in 3rd

so by no measure do they have more talent - we just didnt have a coach

i thought they got hosed on that too - several posters here think he is going to jump to the NFL soon - either way he will get a shot a big job soon
