Official Jon Gruden Thread XIV

This is from LonzoVol (Big Orange Report writer, Warner Agee) from TOS.

Sounds like there is a big divide between Dave Hart and the boosters. Can Hart survive long term if this is true?

Honest question......why is Hart still at UT?

I can't argue that and it could mean what I heard isn't true. Maybe he didn't have any control over what his agent said? I don't know...:dunno:

Maybe because a deal couldn't be reached Gruden fell on the sword to make him look bad. This way the next coach would be given somewhat a chance with Vol fans.

My gut feeling is that Hart knows something we don't know.

He MUST have a big name hire in place/planned.

If he did lose his big fish and is stuck with the "lower tier", why would he not involve the UT fan base with an update? Communication is key with an unstable mob.

I really hope he knows what he's doing.

Just in case you have doubts...and although you may have been kidding, please do not associate me with being racist...EVER.

I respect everyone on an equal level til proven differently. Thank you

Call me naive, but Would Hart put his job on the line like this? What's it to him who the Boosters want, if they are footing most of the bill? The only scenario that even works for me (IF this is true) would be that there were too many leaks and Hart/agent devised a plan to shut everyone up by saying it is all over, while waiting for the time to announce.

And that doesn't work for me, because I don't know why Gruden would even need to stall?

Hey JCP201, hope all is well...can't imagen why you would want to chang your name to (naive) :)

Just a hypothetical. Let's say a certain hiring manager already had his guy picked out. Long ago. But he knew there was no way his constituency would accept him. So he comes up with a scheme to act with no urgency, go through the motions of flirting with a high-profile candidate with no intention of consummating said deal. Meanwhile he stalls under the guise of just starting the search all the while other managers fill their vacancies. Eventually with the candidate pool dwindling one of the viable options left is the individual he had pegged from the very beginning. Reluctantly, the constituency has no choice but to accept him.

Just a hypothetical, of course.

Just reposting from last night.

Strong is a good coach but not a Homerun. He just not had much time to prove himself but I think he has done good there. Wonder why some vol fans hate Strong? I have not analyzed his preformace coaching really deep but record looks good. Not racist but helps that he is black and most really good athletes are black that he can relate too them better.

When strong got there they had a losing record. Look at his record this year.

Truth.

In the three years prior to his arrival they were averaging only 4 wins a season. In the three years since his arrival Louisville is averaging over 7 wins a season (That was before they beat Rutgers and not including the bowl game).

So, if Louisville wins their bowl game Strong will have averaged 8 wins a season DOUBLE what happened in the three years before he came.

People talk about his recruiting being bad. He is recruiting to Louisville, largely against the SEC/B1G schools due to proximity and he has averaged a 10 point or so bump in recruiting. In fact, his first two years on the job will average about the same recruiting class average as Franklin has at Vandy.

I've said this all before, but it bears repeating.

The difference between Franklin (Im using Franklin as a measuring stick because so many are impressed with what he has done) and Strong is that Strong has actually beaten a ranked team, beaten teams with winning records, won a bowl game. Look at the media love that Franklin is getting (no doubt that is helping recruiting). Do you think UT's first black coach would get a ton of press coverage? Do you think that would help Strong's already solid ability to recruit? I do.

The man has never had a losing season. his record coming into UT would be .608 all time.

Compare that to where we have been since we fired Fulmer. We hired two coaches with all time losing records...this is a huge step forward, even if the fans feel like it is a let down.

End rant. ;)

That info was relayed on Thursday.

So folks from the AD side were just hanging on to those nuggets of information until they needed to drop them to the media yesterday? They didn't just realize all of that on Thursday morning over coffee. I know people from that side have been watching the message boards. With that in mind, if they felt that Jon was just playing with them why not calm the fan furor? Why wait until after the TFP article to start covering down with the media. To many things about the media statements don't add up.

Based on what babyvol said, I'll continue to blame Dave Hart.

Oh and I think the Gruden threads should remain. Not necessarily because Gruden is/will ever come to UT, but because I think most in here share a common goal of not wanting to see UT "settle" EVER again, if that makes sense

My 2¢.
I have always been a Vol and shall always be a Vol. I will always support my University and all of it's coaches whether I think they are the best for the job or not. I'll admit I did get really caught up in Gruden. It got the best of me. Do I think it could still happen? Possibly. If it does, wonderful! If not, I will give my all for Tennessee and its staff. Didn't like Kiffen, but supported him. Never heard of Dooley, supported him. Whomever we hire as our next coach, I will be behind them 100% and support my Vols. Everyone else should as well.

Would you be willing to pay 4 or 4.5 for strong?

Well I don't know. Strong is a very good coach but I think for that kind of money there are others that could be had for that or maybe a little more. Remember we are approaching Saban, Stoops and other premium coaches. Would you put Strong in their category? I would make a call to Chip Kelly and see if he would listen. I have read he is ridiculously under paid. Worst case you get him a raise. Lol

Here's what I was told.

10mil total offer including assistants when we started at 8.

He kept asking for more stipulations of control. Nothing specific here

A number of times they thought it was finished as in he was going to accept.

After giving he what he wanted a number of times with only more demands they decided he never had any itentions to accept so they had to move on.

They didn't have time to worry about PR( that one pissed me off)

And that strong, gundy, fedora and fisher were the targets going forward. Fedora was least likely because of his one year tenure

Most believable post I have read on here in a while. No drama.

Did you guys just get married? JK really jk

EVEN IF WE CAN'T GET GRUDEN

I am a new volnation member but a long time "lurker". I went to my first UT game with my dad in '76 later attended UT and went to med school at UT. In short, like most of us here I love my vols!
This slow decline beginning at the end of Fulmer and through the last two hirings to me seem like a modern day bloodletting where the spirit and vigor of the entire volnation has been bleeding out. I think some of are clinging on to the idea of Gruden more than the man himself. I am desperate for someone who can reinstill the excitement and passion back to UT. This swagger is t only on the field but bleeds into pride on campus and the classroom. Anyone who thinks academia on the hill and pride on the field are separate are misinformed.
We want....more desperately need a coach to bring us back to life. I don't want a guy with " "promise" I want a guy who will ignite us. At this critical hour in our university and football program we need a battle cry to rally behind. The gruden thread has how many hits?.... I have been watching 5-6 thousands fans on the thread in the wee hours of the morning. This is the spark!!!! It's here we just have to harness it. When we have the excitement recruits and students alike don't consider us.... They hope to be one of us. This is what we need. Sadly gruden is the hire that I think does this right now. I still pray we get him, but if we don't I also pray we don't just take another "why not this guy with promise"
This hire is of paramount importance and I hope we get it right this time.
Go vols!

Hart's idea of a big name is Jimbo. No thanks.
