If money is not an object then put your money where your mouth is UT. Make Gruden a member of the Fortune 500 if you have to. We don't want Fedora La Exploradora.

Boom!! You're number two for the livewell!!!!

Yeah, but you're throwing a Tiny Torpedo and boating dinks under the slot. Sure you can weigh them in, but you're still 17 pounds down. That's a Gruden I rumor lure you're tossing.

So Hyams reports no Gruden and everyone has total meltdown? I still haven't seen a report that cites a source other than Hyams or someone that originally cited Hyams...what's the deal?

What is there to lose?

I'm starting to feel like you here. I'm going to vent, so bear with me.....

In the end, if its not Gruden, I fear that not a single soul will be happy with what me might have to end up with.

The saddest of affairs is if we hang out so much money and not a single top notch coach wants it, then UT Football is done. We are not as great of a destination as we all want to believe.

All this conference realignment going on. I mean, hey - why not just bale. Big East has some openings now, or Conference USA, or maybe even the MAC. Shoot, we could take A&M's place over in the Big 12. Why not?
If we get another sub par coach, the mighty Vols need to except their fate that Vanderbilt now represents the best of Tennessee in the SEC. If it's a money issue, think of the revenue we could get playing SEC teams. Consult Southern Miss, and La Tech, UAB on how to rake in the cash being an SEC patsy.
I say, leave. If you can't pony up for a decent coach, just go ahead and bail.

Kiffin - A losing record before he got to Knoxville (born on third base and thinks he hit a home run). USC is finding out that he and Pop's are losers from the git go.
Dooley, A losing record before he landed here. Hell of a nice guy, maybe too nice.

Storyline from me: It'S ABOUT RECRUITING. Period. Case in point, Chizic (also a loser before he came to Auburn). Cam Newton made him look like a genius, and I'd wager to bet that Fulmer's glory years weren't so much about coaching but about talent.
You have to get the name that excites the 18 year old kids that you are drawing from. Gruden can do that IMMEDIATELY with the same authority that Saban does.

All these other guys, I fear we are in for another lame coach. It's been more than 5 years now since times were even close to good. Can we afford another 5? I think not.

So go ahead Hart, get a bargain basement coach and watch him grow. Neyland stadium rocked for 1 half against Florida, and I smiled. I'd forgotten what that was like. Seems dreamlike now.

I know this is negative - I'm not a Vandy home boy.. All Orange here. But damn.. this is frustrating as hell. Had to vent.

i agree, there is still no official word from anyone - still have to wait and see. remember saben and meyer said they werent going to coach and then a few days later they were coaching

Yep and they made public statements saying so as well.

Been a member for a while...hardly ever post though. Been reading and following this thread for 2 weeks now non-stop. I want to pose a question for the OG's or anyone that been around for a bit...

If the Gruden deal has in fact fallen through, who would be the absolute best possible and most realistic candidate that we could pursue, that would not only succeed at UT, but also that us fans would accept? I'm trying to think of others beside Golden or Strong (which have been mentioned a lot) because I just don't think they could be the answer. I'm still all Gruden though until I hear from Hart or Gruden that's its not happening. I'll hang up and listen...

Balancing "best possible" with "realistic", I would go with (in no particular order)

Patterson (TCU)
Peterson (Boise State)
Gundy (OK State)

These may not be the easiest coaches to pursuade but I would consider them "realistic"

Until I hear it's not Gruden, I will believe it's Gruden.

I will get flamed for the aforementioned by the naysayers but I honestly don't give a damn any more.

Nor should you. I am afraid that I no longer believe its Gruden (although I feel like a kid who just found out Santa wasn't real, not ready to fully give up) but I do believe that he was a real possibility and that things did not fall apart till the end.

Which is HUGE

IMO

I'll say it again. They may get scooped on this at the end of the day, but they have the easiest access to Gruden for him to squash the rumors. Hasn't happened.

If they can't substantiate any rumor involving one of their network faces, they aren't going to run anything.

Basically, if it don't come straight from the UT AD or from the Gruden camp, it doesn't count in the eyes of ESPN, and those two sides ain't talking.

Move along people, there's nothing to see here.

So if Gruden says No i don't want to coach at Tennessee ...but he doesn't leave ESPN or if he goes to the NFL and Hart has given him all that he asked for...Do we still blame Hart?

Maybe the AD is leaking negative info to calm Knoxville down while they get Gruden safely to the locker room for his presser at 3. Wishful thinking.

Where are you on this Coasty? You at 80% now or still at a 100%? :)

Until I hear direct from AD I have to be at 80% ... the deal from Volquest rings somewhat true to me....

Sorry, wish I could stay at 100% but the fact that Gruden has done this before and what he said to Mike and Mike makes me believe it could be bad news

PosiVol - Gruden is coming!!!!!!! Don't believe the critics!!!!

NegaVol - Nobody wants to coach at the dumpster fire that is UT, we are just gonna end up taking the interim tag off Chaney

I'll reiterate this for those wondering...

If this deal went south, it went south in the last 24-48 hours. Make no mistake, there had been an agreement that he would become the next HC. And so this is very strange considering how sure our camp was that all was finished but the dotted line.

I am grasping at hope here, but if he did leave us at the alter, my GUESS is that he got wind of an NFL opportunity he couldn't pass up. Maybe like a San Diego or something. It stretches reason for me to think they got to this point and couldnt agree on something like staff money, which they would have already discussed.
