I'm not a fan of Fisher or Fedora either.

Hire Strong, give him the $ to put a great staff together & lets move along.

Best idea I've heard. Put that money toward elite assistants. Strong is the only one of the likely names that seems to be worth it. There just aren't many available elite coaches. BUTCH Davis wouldn't bother me too much, I think he's learned his lesson with NCAA issues, but either way, we would need an elite OC and staff for either to succeed.

Les Miles before going to LSU 28-21

Nick Saban before going to LSU 31-21-1

Mack Brown before going to Texas 80-69

From Gruden cliff notes

Vegas odds on who the next Tennessee coach will be:
Butch Davis (3/1)
Larry Fedora (15/4)
Jim Tressel (9/2)

Well this makes me feel better...Stoops wasn't even a choice for UK's search

2/1 Bobby Petrino (former Arkansas head coach)
3/1 David Cutcliffe (Duke head coach)
4/1 Sonny Dykes (Louisiana Tech head coach)
9/2 Tommy Tuberville (Texas Tech head coach)
5/1 Mike MacIntyre (San Jose State head coach)
5/1 Willie Taggart (Western Kentucky head coach)
8/1 Gus Malzahn (Arkansas State head coach)
12/1 Dirk Koetter (Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator)

For the most part there is a fairly strong correlation between people that are convinced it is gruden and people that thought we would sign both Derrick Henry and Alvin Kamara.

Charlie Strong would be a good candidate for a school that was strong and on auto-pilot. However, our needs require a dynamic individual with a lot of charisma and a big personality. Unfortunately for Mr. Strong, that is not him.

Yea b/c Nick Saban is full of charisma & has a big personality. Lol

You make a good point, but can you honestly say you've followed Lville football closely enough to say that definitively about Strong?

Id be happy with Strong if Gruden doesnt come. Yes hes lost 2 straight games and will probably lose tonight, but people dont understand he lose his starting rb in the cuse loss and teddy bridgewater broke his wrist last week against UCONN. UofL doesnt have good depth behind those guys and if those 2 dont get hurt Louisville goes undefeated this year IMO.
Mt List:
1. Gruden
2. Butch Davis
3. Strong
Those are the guys that I think could do great things at UT.

If it's no on Stoops and Gruden, I really hope they hire Strong. He'll jump to an SEC program soon and if we don't hire him I think we'll regret it a la Sumlin.

This board is hilarious, people will find anything to complain about over a coach. His eyes aren't blue, his hair isn't perfect, he doesn't chest bump anyone, he is to outgoing, he is to tough, the fans don't like him, he's a prick, he's to nice, blah blah blah.

How about we hire a damn good football coach instead of worrying about that other crap. I don't give a crap what a guys personality is like if he's winning 9-11 games a year here.

Stong doesnt need a big personality, all he needs to do is win and he will. he would be able to recruit players
UT hasnt been able to recruit in a long time. Everything else will take care of itself.

IMO that if his eyes are not blue then he should not even be considered an option...

NCAA.com has them ranked 26th in overall defense.

His success as a DC under Meyer who is an offensive guy makes him more attractive to me than Smart, who could just be benefiting from the HC. It's not like Strong has been at Lville forever either, it takes time to rebuild what was a train wreck. No way to know for certain if success in Big East will transfer to SEC, but unless you hire a proven SEC coach, you have to take that risk. Davis is the same scenario.

this year is his best year and he is in year 3

his defense is 44th in the country, 5th of 8 in big east

he has not played a ranked team this year, it took him to OT to beat cincy, florida intnl took him to the brink, up 36-7 against UNC at the half lville give up 27 2nd half points almost losing the game, he lost to syracuse, he lost to CT

in 2011 he lost to florida intnl, lost to marshall

he has to date played and beaten 1 ranked team - a win against #24 WVU in 2011

so yeah i dont think he has proven much about his ability to coach and win

26th in yards per game. Not elite, but not bad at all.

Total Defense - NCAA.com

Overall rankings are kind of meaningless across college football without context. They didn't really play against any elite offenses(UNC the only top20 I think). If you look at conference (who played similar opponents) they are pretty middle of the pack.

I'm not saying Strong isn't a good defensive mind, just pointing out a fallacy in using the ranking to prove that point.

That link has them ranked at 25

no it doesnt - they give up 24.5 points a game according to the link - that is behind arizona state for 44th - try looking again - just make sure it is points per game - that is the default it should come up to - i was clicking around out of curiosity on my computer and i think the 25th is yds/game

His defense is top 25. At some point you have to factor in where he is. He took that program at Rock bottom, and in a short time has brought it back to relevance. He doesn't have the budget to staff and recruit at a level that would make Lville elite, so you have to look at what he's done given the resources he was provided. It's always a gamble to take a coach from any conference but the SEC, bit from the available options, he seems to be one of the few with the best resume. You could say the same about a lot of coaches. Has Franklin beaten anyone ranked or even anyone with a winning record? Does that mean he wouldn't at a better school? It's a crap shoot, there isn't anyone available who is a sure thing.

Points per game is meaningless without context as well. A team who runs a no-huddle offense is going to run more plays, therefore the defense is on the field longer and will give up more points on average.
