Most of all of your angst is between your ears. There is not one piece of solid info that states that Gruden will or will not come here. The second in between the ears angst is most of you have set up that if Gruden doesn't come, then it's a colossal failure. There are other good coaches. Maybe not as exciting, but very, very good hires none the less. Fisher, Gundy, Patterson, Fedora, Strong, and, imo, Golden (in that order) would be very good hires. Guys that have had success at least at one place making players better and upping the talent base and all those places are not as good as UT. This is not all or nothing.

My angst is tied to the fact that I've been going to UT football games my entire life and I'm frustrated with the state that the program is in. Yes there are a lot of solid football coaches but I question that they (the Ath. Dept.) are going to get one.

I'm already disappointed in Hart. He's let this go long enough that recruits are hoping for Gruden. If Gruden doesn't happen, even if we get an amazing hire, recruits and fans will be disappointed. Horrible PR job UNLESS Gruden is 100% locked up. If that's the case, I'll eat crow about calling Hart disappointing.

I don't understand the argument that this is horrible PR by the AD. Neither the AD nor Hart has never given any indication that it would even approach Gruden. The speculation surrounding Gruden was all self-inflicted by the fans, boosters, and media. The adoration surrounding Gruden has been blown out of proportion. Gruden also never gave any indication that he would want to coach at the college level, IIRC. He simply stated that he would probably coach again one day. The AD has no control over rumors created by such parties. Moreover, Hart said from the beginning that the search would be conducted in-house without use of a search committee. Therefore, they have no responsibility to make public statements regarding the coaching search.

I think they'll get one mentioned above. We have had 5 bad seasons in the last 23 years. It is frustrating that we are in the midst of it, but even UF struggled mid 80's and they're like the Yankees of CFB. Hart is doing work. Fighting the wrongs from the Hamilton years - which I like MH as a person, not an AD - but we cannot fix all of our problems overnight. Hell, we aren't a week out from our last ballgame and people are frustrated with "how long" this is taking. People need to learn patience.

According to Hyams this afternoon, they've given indication they are (were) going after Gruden.

I really want to believe that Gruden will come, but I can't count the number of times I've gotten my hopes up for this program in the past few years and seen them dashed shortly after and that makes it very hard.

Sports are cyclical. Top schools can't be good every year. How relevant was LSU before Saban? How relevant will they be after Miles and Chavis leave/retire? What condition was Bama in before Saban and Shula's one ten-win season? I don't see Penn St. being relevant again for a while. ND had a good 4-5 years of downtime before Brian Kelly. What about Michigan during the Rich Rod era? They aren't good this year either.

I could mention many more examples, but you get the picture.

You totally ignored the reasons I gave. Recruits and fans have been allowed to believe for too long that Gruden can happen. Unless it's a guarantee, smart ADs shoot down those rumors so people aren't disappointed when someone else is hired. I didn't say he has a responsibility to do so, but he is making any other hire a disappointment to a large number of recruits and fans by allowing the hopes to run rampant.

There is a reason it hasn't been denied.

So let me get this straight.... We have fans that would be upset with hart if we don't hire gruden because they chose to believe the same so called insiders that completely blew the randy Shannon call? I'm not sure why anyone would believe those guys over Hubbs who has been saying ill believe it when I see it.

Not the same people.

This rumor isn't localized to message board hounds. EVERY UT fan and recruit has heard the rumor and the confidence in its truth that so many people have. The AD has to recognize that and put it to rest if it's not a done deal if he doesn't want to look incompetent and let false hopes balloon throughout the fanbase.

This is definitely not the same as the Randy Shannon gossip. Much more weight with Gruden. Might not happen, but after today, no one can dispute that there have been serious negotiations between UT and Gruden.

Wes Rucker...

We heard from one of our better sources in the coaching business — again, someone who knows Gruden — that Gruden’s wife has preferred UT (her alma mater and home region) and has asked her husband to find a way to make it happen. So while Wednesday’s news definitely didn’t look good for UT, we can’t rule Gruden out at this point. We’ve even heard a tiny bit of pure speculation that suggests Wednesday’s news could cool everyone’s jets on the Gruden situation and allow both parties a bit more time to work on finding more middle ground before a potential face-to-face meeting. We’re not saying we believe that, but we’d be lying if we didn’t mention that we’ve heard that speculation. It could mean things are done, but we’re not reporting that at this point because we don’t know that to be true.

I know that things can be cyclical in sports. I wasn't born yesterday. All I'm going to say is that there are lessons that can be learned from the Saban/Bama model. These lessons can be applied now and in the future. Spend it to make it.

No, I didn't ignore your reasons. I directly addressed those reasons. Hart and the AD have no responsibility or requirement to address the fans or recruits regarding the coaching search. He's not trying to please the fans, at the end of the day. He is making a decision based on what will give UT a winning program. That might not mean giving the fans, boosters, and the media the name they want.
