Official Jon Gruden Thread XII

Morning fellow Grudes! I see folks are in a tizzy...be calm, nobody is going to flat out admit anything,...anything else I miss?

I can name 10 jobs that are better than UT right now:

Bama
UF
UGA
LSU
Texas
OU
Ohio State
Michigan
Florida State
USC

You want me to keep going, chief? Trust me, UT is not a top 10 job right now.

To me the worth of the job has everything to do with $$$. If we pay in the top 10, then we are top 10. Dooley wasn't paid like a top 10 coach, but hopefully our next coach will be paid like the No. 1 coach he should be. That is the only thing that will put this to rest.

LULZ @ this place.

Boro, if you step back and take a look at it from those of us with no inside information, you can understand why. All we get are repeated negative reports--except you and the other OGs on here. It gets tough to keep the faith.

Because the only people whipped up into a mad furor over Gruden represent a small part of the fanbase and are mostly contained on this and a handful of other boards.

Not many people realistically expect Gruden to be our coach, whether you believe it or not.

I was in a Starbucks yesterday in Nashville. I handed the lady a ut mug to put my coffee in. The guy behind me out of nowhere says "Did you hear we are hiring Gruden?".

It was the third time that has happened this week.

Believe what you want, but A LOT of people believe and want Gruden to be our coach.

Ok wizard, just insert where you think UT fits in the above list.

It's a matter of opinion. You have a defeatist opinion, and think your team sucks. Others actually have pride in their team and still think the UT job is coveted by many. Are there 24 schools that have better history and tradition, potential, and a nicer stadium and facilities to boot? I don't think so, but that is only my opinion. Just like your list is an opinion.

Maybe he's just trying to help Vol fans cope with the fact that HE"S NOT COMING! lol Time to move on folks.

His comments did not reduce or increase the likelihood of him coming to UT. He said what every other person would have said in that situation.

I was listening to our local station this morning - Sports Animal in the Tricities. Kenny and Bobby were interviewing Fuad Reviez. Fuad says Gruden is NOT coming to UT, it's just wishful thinking. And to hear him talk about Dooly was enlightening - said he thinkks Dooly threw the Vandy game just to get fired.

Too busy this morning but could someone post the dates Saban and Meyer denied talking to Bama and Ohio State respectively with the dates they were announced?

I think both were less than 48 hours, Meyer was the next day iirc. Both were far more a "denial" than Jon nervously wanting to move on and not talk about it.

Saban made several denials in 2006. He made denials of varying certainty on Nov 7, Dec 7, Dec 21, and Dec 27. He was hired on Jan 4, 2007.

For further reference, Jon Gruden was much more direct when addressing coaching rumors last December:

I'm still skeptical, but those two articles have some interesting information.

Whether he was coming or not he wasn't going to say yes it's true I'm gong to UT before anybody at UT has even said anything or released anything. You could tell he was ready to move on and talk about other things. GO VOLS GET GRUDEN!! I BELIEVE!!

"I have not been offered any job nor is there a deal in place, I plan on spending Thanksgiving with my family and will not comment on this any further."

- Meyer 11/23/2011

What I was told when Dooley was talked about being fired was that Gruden was the main target. Yes, they would discuss other options (Strong, Fisher, Patterson, Davis, etc.) But my source told me those were strictly a Plan B. He said a couple weeks ago to watch the names start to fade due to the deal with Gruden becoming more and more in place. Believe what you want. But i cant deny everything he said (ex:fading) has been spot on.

Moving on sucks. There are no other good (realistic) options

I agree, I don't want to move on. Trust me being stuck in Georgia and having to listen to all the SEC champ talk this week is killing me. The gruden hire was the only thing giving me hope, now I feel that is gone.
I don't feel there is another coach out there that will get me excited. I just am numb right now , which is kinda sad to be about a sport. but I do love Vols Football and it kills me to be where we are.

He denied it all, he said none of it was true.

He denied the report from Memphis. That is, he denied having a contract in hand, and he denied that he was to receive an ownership interest in the Browns.

Further, he said he didn't want to talk about it anymore.

Oddly, after hearing him speak on Mike and Mike, I have more confidence than ever that he is in very serious negotiations with the university.

If there was not at least some tooth to the rumors, I would have fully expected him to have emphatically denied interest in the job altogether. That is what he did before Dooley was hired.
