Official Jon Gruden Thread XII

What was he going to say? "Yes, I'm getting an ownership interest in the Browns, but the NFL is going to let me keep doing MNF", or "Yes, I'm taking the UT job, even though you didn't really ask me that", or "I know UT and ESPN wanted to announce this differently, but I thought going ahead and confirming this at 7:15 a.m. EDT was a better idea".

What else was there to say at this point???

I can name 10 jobs that are better than UT right now:

Bama
UF
UGA
LSU
Texas
OU
Ohio State
Michigan
Florida State
USC

You want me to keep going, chief? Trust me, UT is not a top 10 job right now.
No need to act doucheish. Congratulations..... You can name some current winning programs. This program has as much potential as anyone.

GRUDEN ON MIKE AND MIKE THIS MORNING: GREENBERG: ...How are you Jon? GRUDEN: I'm doing fine. Good morning guys. MIKE AND MIKE: Good Morning GREENBERG: We'll start with this, because it's happened again. Now there's a report, and look if your gonna be connected to jobs it might as well involve the Governor of Tennessee. News Channel 3 has learned that you, Jon Gruden, have a contract offer in h...and, from the University of Tennessee and that a decision could be made as early as today. Part of this apparently is that you would get a piece of the Cleveland Browns who were recently bought by Jim Haslem who is a huge Tennessee booster cause he played at Tennessee and he is the father of Tennessee Governor Bill Haslem. So, first and formost Jon is this, is there any truth to this whatsoever? GRUDEN: "No there isn't. I should probably tell my wife that because it does involve her and my kids. But no there's no truth to that. I'm just excited about Monday Night Football and getting ready for the Giants and the Redskins." MIKE: Okay, thats good because if you were gonna go we would like to talk about some sorta cabinet position with the Tennessee Government: GOLIC: That's exactly right, that's some kinda pull. Yeah. GRUDEN. "Yeah, I apologize, I really don't have time to get into all that stuff. I like what I'm doing. I'm just trying to hang on to the job I have to be honest with you. So, let's leave it at that and get into the real nuts and bolts of the Mike and Mike Show..." (Goes on to discuss NFL)

Nuts and bolts? Did he happen to mention that he also had an impact wrench and a large air compressor that he planned on fixing the UT football program?

No one in particular, not even sure who posted it this time lol. Just offering advice. I have hidden everyone that seem to have the capacity to believe the school and Cadillac rumors and it has been a vastly more enjoyable thread.

If it got any more enjoyable, don't know if I could stand it. But we may be finding out soon.

Too busy this morning but could someone post the dates Saban and Meyer denied talking to Bama and Ohio State respectively with the dates they were announced?

I think both were less than 48 hours, Meyer was the next day iirc. Both were far more a "denial" than Jon nervously wanting to move on and not talk about it.

Meyer denied on Nov 24th and accepted on Nov 28th

Saban denied Dec 27th and accepted on Jan 3rd

(if my google-fu is correct)

Look...I never thought we had a chance in the first place. HOWEVER, those of you have believed, this Mike and Mike thing is definitely NOT a reason to stop believing. The guy had a golden opportunity to squelch everything...but he left the door wide open.

M&M asked specifically about the Memphis article, which said Gruden had a contract in hand and was even offered part ownership in the Browns.

Gruden simply said there's no truth to it and then got VERY uncomfortable.

Remember back when you were a teenager? Remember teen logic? Coaches skirt around and deny these questions all the time. That report may be 100% true and Gruden may also be feeling he's telling the truth in his mind. Perhaps HE doesn't have the contract...but his agent does? There are so many possibilities.

Again, as someone who has worked in PR, that quote from him today actually give me a bit of hope when I didn't have much before.

This BS of whether Tennessee is a top 10, top 15, top 25 job is stupid. The rank of the job definitely depends on the candidate. I know there are a lot of coaches who would find the Tennessee job better than many of those you listed. Others...maybe not. But to say Trust me, UT is not a top 10 job right now displays your ignorance.

Clean it up Chief.

Ok wizard, just insert where you think UT fits in the above list.

On Meyer you had denial around Nov 23 Meyer denies report linking him to Ohio State | Fox News

And hiring on Nov 28 For New Coach at Ohio State, It?s First Down and $4 Million - NYTimes.com

I'm going to disagree with you... My Dad, who doesn't like, watch or attend football asked me the other day if the guy from MNF is going to be the coach. It's not just on VN my friend.

Is your dad whipped up in a furor over it?

Rumors get out and people say things. Most of the people (Tennessee fans and others) I know have laughed about it. If Gruden isn't hired, the only people that are going to be *****ing and moaning are the same people who ***** and moan about everything, mainly people on this board.

Hey Fade out of those your listed which ones are open? I think that is what most people are looking at. Jobs are are open or possibly to open soon. I would say that USC or UF are the two best gigs in coaching. Good weather all year long and some of the hottest chicks on the planet surrounding your program.

People that think we are currently a top 10 job are living in a fantasy world. That should be the job of the next coach to restore our place in it but we aren't there now for certain!

I don't think many Grudenites think the Grude is coming because Tennessee is a top 10 job.

We think he's interested because he has always spoke very highly of Tennessee and because he has more ties to Tennessee than any other major college coaching gig (apparently).

Oh and I meant to add...if he really wanted to "kill" this "rumor," he would have said something like "You know, I really love the University of Tennessee and wish them the best in their coaching search. I am personally not interested in this position, but I'm willing to help those guys in any way I can."

Letting us down easy.

He didn't do that at all.
