There are currently 12 BCS college football head coaching positions open. 4 of 12 are in the SEC. After some thought and reading several articles on the subject, I rank the top 5 college football coaching openings as follows:

1) Tennnessee
2) Arkansas
3) North Carolina State
4) Kentucky
5) Auburn (perhaps lower given the impending NCAA sanctions)

Tennessee is sitting at the top of the pack by all indications. We were not at this level a few years ago after the Kiffin catastrophe. We have an experienced AD with a history of supporting excellence who is completing the search. There are many great candidates available. We have the history, facilities, and better talent. We know the hand we were dealt by the NCAA... the end is in sight.

The future is bright Volnation. Go Vols!

This is just speculation of course, but many people think if Texas loses another game Mack could be out and there aren't many jobs at any level better than that one. Wouldn't surprise me seeing how Oklahoma has dominated them recently, that job depends on your record against OU.

But i agree with your order based on openings now, except i'd give UK a slight edge over NC State just because the state of the ACC is in flux and there's talk of FSU and Clemson jumping ship soon. Coaches want to coach in the SEC, and bringing a good season to Lexington would be a launch pad for a payday somewhere else for someone looking to climb coaching ranks.

Auburn is way ahead of Kentucky and even Arkansas IMO. NC State would not rank that high either. They are about the same as BC just with an easier schedule. So I would say UT, Auburn,Cal, Ark., Kentucky.

Kentucky has to be on the bottom. Auburn at least has some talent.

No, Kentucky has some huge opportunities. The NCAA rumors about Auburn are not good... Most coaches with top qualifications wouldn't step foot there right now. They may get a Dooley.

Like they were saying on TSR earlier, people wanted more to come to Tennessee when we hired Dooley because of the NCAA lurking around. Don't know if Auburn has enough $$$. And as much as I hate Kentucky if I were an offensive minded coach who ran a spread option, and I was really confident in my system, I would take that job but wouldn't plan on staying for the long haul

UT
Cal
Auburn/Arkansas
Kentucky

Cal has a lot of potential and a cool location in a talent-rich state, plays in a winnable conference and holds solid appeal for West Coast guys. If Petersen can be had, that's where he'll probably go.

You can't put aubren ahead of arkansas, unless you don't know much about football..

Cal is definitely better than Kentucky and NC State. They can easily get good talent from California alone. It's not too hard to win there in reality...just don't have average coaches

Auburn and Arkansas must be elevated because they are SEC/SWC traditional football powerhouses. Both can be turned around quickly with good recruiting. Auburn has a decent engineering program and they are private.

Under the circumstances, I think UT is the best open coaching job. As has been stated previously, I think the pending Auburn NCAA sanctions and the short leash (i.e., outsized expectations) their coaches get will make Auburn less desirable than it should otherwise be. Heck, they have had two undefeated seasons in the last decade and dominated Alabama and UF for several years (though not recently). So, you would think it would get a lot of interest. Ultimately, I think Auburn ends up with Petrino because a) Petrino got fired for cause and is not getting a buy-out and he is probably itching to get another gig and b), with the looming sanctions and the outsized expectations, I doubt a big name, established coach is willing to take the risk of being the next coach. Thus, it would seem that Petrino would be the perfect candidate because he is a big name that needs a job and Auburn probably cannot attract an established coach from another school under the circumstances. I think Arkansas hires Malzahn because Malzahn's wife wants to be in Arkansas, Arkansas is a big step-up from Arkansas State, and Malzahn looks better and better following the implosion at Auburn. He is also a Petrino clone in that he is widely considered an offensive genius and Arkansas had a great deal of success with that type of coach. I think we (UT) end up with Strong or Golden even though I really, really want Gruden, Stoops, Fisher, Peterson, or Patterson.

It's worth at least noting that the SEC spots are great, but there are 4 openings for a reason. Some coaches may rank a "better" job as being one where you may not be fired 22 months after a championship haha

I don't think Golden or Strong are good enough. There will be a lot unhappy fans if it's either of those two. Patterson is a realistic candidate. Hart should make him a huge priority and force him to turn down a lot of money to stay at TCU.

I'd gladly take Fedora from NC before either Golden or Strong. I listened to Fedora on YouTube for five minutes and he seemed to have a lot higher football IQ than Dooley ever did in the 3 years he was here.

I think Auburn would normally be a top job, but with NCAA snooping around, combined with that red elephant named Saban up the road, I think Auburn may be a tougher sell than normal

Gruden is not coming to Tennessee. I think Patterson would be a great fit at Tennessee. We will have to wait until after their bowl game to talk with him or any good coach for that matter. Hart needs to make him an offer that he can't refuse!

IMO we pull Golden out of Miami, too.
