Defense Next Year

Hate we didn't get the young DBs minutes. I watched Marcus Roberson make a lot of plays for Florida yesterday. He wasn't good last year but he and Purifoy will be the best CB combo in the country.

Morrison the young LB was bringing it too for the Gators.

Hope our next coach can get us some impact players on defense that will make big plays for us.

Right now at CB athletically we have Gray/Bonner/Thomas/Orta that are really athletic. Hope the new coaches can get them to play ball.

Coleman may fit best as a nickel back. He won't get his head around for nothing in the world.

I want some guys that'll drop the hammer on some guys on defense. Hate I have to watch other squads to enjoy a football game.

I like Coleman at safety too.

Amen. We need some nasty hitters / sure tacklers.

hopefully we decide to play someone at Free safety who is more of a Hybrid CB/S

we cant keep trotting out 2 Strong safeties on the field and expect to be able to dominate the back half in the passing game.

Randolph and McNeil can play together in Nickel but those guys need to be dropped down.

interesting to see if one of the young bigger CBs could compete and excel between the hashes

I thought Bonner would be a good safety when I first watched his HS film. But he's needed at CB.

Tino Thomas is another one I want to see play. Especially if he can hit.

Orta has the look and ball skills to be a good CB. His toughness and speed on the edge is much needed.

We really need some more athletes at safety. McNeil is an old-school safety but I wouldn't mind seeing how much weight his frame could handle. Doesn't look fast enough at Safety to me. Would love to see him as a OLB in the 4-3 if it was possible.

I watched Florida players just unload on FSU late in that game. That's how you play defense. Everyone talking about just make the tackle is crazy. We need guys that set the tone. Florida was hitting big and talking big. Roberson and Purifoy were bringing at CB too. I swear I love UT but that defense down there is what I like to see. They are nasty from front to back. And their coach is too. Muschamp tells them "You're the firemen go put the fire out". That just makes a defensive ballplayer want to go put in work for that coach.

I'd like to see Orta, Oliver, and Bonner get a chance at CB. Thomas as well.

I'm not sure what to think of McNeil. He's a good run defender, but he just doesn't have that great speed you look for in a safety.

It will be interesting to see who the third LB is next year. Harris? Sapp? Fugate? A freshman? Could Brent Brewer play OLB?

I really think Sapp and Brewer should only play on 3rd and long at LB.

Zanca will help at LB but we really need some impact backers in this class here. Our coaches getting killed on the recruiting trail at the position really really hurt us. After being at UT 3 years Dooley should've rebuilt this roster a bit better on defense.

Losing Santos and Peters hurt a ton...the wheels were coming off the Dooley bus for sure at that point of his career...

I think Vereen is an impact player like you're talking about...I also think Zanca, Goeas and Campbell can be very solid...but we need to land Levenberry...the new coach needs to make him a priority...it sounds like he will listen if we come calling...

That's a class that would greatly improve our situation at LB

AJ Maggitt McCullers Sentimore Couch Obrien McNeill Randolph Bonner Gray. He didn't do a horrible job. I think coaching was more of a problem than recruiting. With good coaches our roster would have produced much better on field results.

Don't know if we have one of those true kill LBs in this class. Zanca and Campbell may be the closest two. Vereen has been reported to be a hugger and I've seen him do a lot of that on his highlight tape.

Now AJ Johnson if the coaches can make him play real football he would be that player. He needs to start meeting RBs facemask on facemask. All that body slamming BS needs to go.

Maggitt was the guy early for us but he'll be coming back off a knee injury.

I wonder how he does next year bc he got hurt so late. What was the final diagnosis, just an acl tear or was it other ligaments?

You've named 10 guys in 3 years. And 3 of them didn't even play a lot. None of them are big hitters for us. Maggitt is the closest thing to being an impact guy.

Again, those are the ten that came to mind, and it has more to do with coaching than ability. Bynum will be a good one too I think. I think people will be amazed how our "bad roster" turns into a good defense with good coaching.

Mcneil brings the wood when he hits.

Also AJ is fighting lineman most of the time when he makes a tackle.

You've said multiple times that AJ needs to stop his "body slamming bs"..honestly how many of his 130+ tackles were considered body slams? 3-4 maybe? I only remember him doing it once against Florida and once against Georgia.

I agree, but not every tackle can be a "bone-jarring" hit. As a whole we need to work on tackling and takeaways---securing (the player) and (attempting to) stripping the ball. Better footwork, eyes, hands, and hip movement. Shorten the field and fill / take away lanes. CB's especially need to learn how to use the sidelines to their advantage.

And their coach is too. Muschamp tells them "You're the firemen go put the fire out". That just makes a defensive ballplayer want to go put in work for that coach.

Motivation and setting the tone begins w/ the coaches and on the practice field---Chemistry. Tough Love. Recognition. Confidence. Execution.

How many hard stick tackles is he making? He needs to play just like Brandon Spikes and he has the talent to do it. He's looking to dump a RB on his head. I want some violent collision tackles out of him. He needs to start blowing backs up.

McNeil is a SS, he's got good speed---4.5. Before it's all said and done he's going to be a special player for us.

This off-season I would like to see Cody Blanc moved back to "D"---FS/Safety---at 6'3" 202 (4.4 40) he has good size and speed.

Mccneil, AJ and Curt are not our problem on Defense. I also forgot Brian Randolph. Our problem is our corners and our Dline. Our corners are to slow and our Dline gets no pressure what so ever.

These guys need to put some helmets on folks. All the reaching is crazy. I want guys that will run through ball carriers all game. Strips should come secondary. A few big hits early make offensive players not want to run certain plays. Manti Teo, Bostic, and Arthur Brown are some guys I like to watch set the tone early for their defenses. You've got to drop the hammer on QBs when you get a chance too. When is the last time we unloaded on a QB all game? When is the last WR we blew up for crossing the middle? I saw two hard hits in our game all of yesterday. That's just BS for A UT defense.

He looks like a 4.6-4.7 guy to me. Don't know if it's just me.

Blanc should've been playing defense from the get go. Everybody that thought he would have this great season on offense were fooling themselves.
