Official Jon Gruden Thread IX

One thing I do like about Chaney, which has nothing to do with his coaching ability, is that he has been loyal to us and our university. He came in with Kiffin and could've likely jumped ship over the last three years, but seems happy to be a part of this program. Just my 2 cents.

Met him at the LV's softball camp last summer with my daughter. He has a daughter about my daughters age and he's a super cool guy, but I am too. Makes neither of us good coaches though.

If CJG wants Chaney so be it. When the offense was clicking it was clicking. Just think CDD couldn't keep all the ducks in a row to make it count

Not sure, just was told it had very little to do with compensation and was more about control and commitments made on the chancellors side. Not my best source, full disclosure, but a trusted friend and former Associate AD.

Well, this seems to back up the conclusion I made a few minutes to go.

Whats up Grudenites I am out of bed for a while need some updates whats the good news for the day. Anything new Timelines? Announcements?

Hope you're feeling better.

More people saying around Nov 30th for announcement, with some rumblings of earlier.

I was just joking bout the never doubting thing I have wavered more than the waves of the sea...ha ha

Some days solid, some with questions, and some with a never...ha ha

Glad to hear...welcome to the Believers Club

Chaney? West coast offense?

You do know what the west coast offense is, yes?

Chaney runs a pro-version of the spread offense. Not even close.

West Coast is pretty much a pro-spread, no? You hit horizontal passes to open up large vertical runs and passes... I mean, what he is running now isn't a West Coast, but I wouldn't consider it a pro-spread either, not enough WRs being used.

I can't strongly disagree except for the fact Hinshaw already has a relationship with some of the recruits we will go forward with. T is good but Hinshaw isn't chopped liver

Never said he was I think Hinshaw may be the best recruiter or at worse 2nd best behind Graham on this staff. Keeping both would be great but Tee would be my choice between the 2.

I like Bates, but the guy has not made much of a name for himself since the two years he called plays in Denver for Cutler, which was Mike Shanahan's offense. He was with Carroll for 2 years (one with USC, and another in Seattle) and then let go, and now is back to coaching QBs because Cutler begged Chicago to bring him in.

Chaney is better than Jeremy Bates, guys.

Not sure about that, think Bates would do well in college. Chaney's redzone, situational and short down yardage to go playcalling is horrific. But if he is retained Gruden will be making those calls so it wont be as bad.

A true west coast offense (which is what Gruden has always ran) consists of a ton of heavy sets and quick timing passes to set up the run.

Not a ton of vertical patterns.

Chaney's offense is just a pro-style spread resembling Norv Turner's offense in San Diego and Chan Gailey's offense in Buffalo.

Let's entertain this Chaney thing for a moment. If he does stay, I say we call him the cockroach, and that's not an insult.

We've blown this place to hell and back three times (including the assistant exodus last year), but Chaney lives on.

When Rod Wilks graduates, Chaney remains.

How many head coaches does it take to fire Jim Chaney?

so you are saying that if we have a nuclear holocaust,
the only living things left will be cockroaches,
Keith Richards and Jim Chaney?

Hey guys... Random question and not sure where to put it. If I wanted to purchase a puppy from Smokey (ie Eric Berry did for his dad) anyone know who Id contact? My 7 yr old has asked Santa for one. Yikes! It's either get it or break the news about Santa to him this year.

West coast refers to an offense that lends itself primarily to the pass. They use numeric systems to describe their play. Chaney's may not be called that, but it looks like it.

The fact that Bates was hired by Carroll, and then let go is telling. The fact that every coach tries to keep Chaney around is also telling.

I don't see the Chaney thing working out. Can't imagine him being kept as OC and Gruden will be his own QB coach so what will he do?

Still trying to get over this. Boro said the same as I would have. I think the talks of us all getting together after this to celebrate just took a turn. Maybe it would be best if we all just went our separate ways. I think it might be what safest for Boro and the gang.:)
