Jmho Smart wouldn't be a good first choice. Yes, he coaches under Saban and is the highest paid guy on the staff but he's not even the Assoc HC...so imo he's not ready for UT as his first SEC gig....maybe Arky, Aub or KY.

IMO "Homerun" Group...NFl guys like Gruden and Jack Del Rio but Hue Jackson(USC, Cal State and ASU) is a guy that could excel at UT

"Safe" group- college HC like Patterson,Larry Fedora,Mike Gundy or Butch Jones not big names but successful at each stop.

"Risk-reward" Bobby P, Butch Davis, Strong.

"Maybe not ready" Mark Stoops and Kirby Smart

My top 5 in order:
Gruden
Hue Jackson
Butch Davis
Strong
Patterson

Spot on HG, especially with the safe group many on here are mistaking homerun and safe.

Now this is more like it. I wouldn't be upset with any of the 5 here.

On Butch Jones, hasn't he follwed Brian Kelly at CMU and Cincy? He seems like a pretty good coach, but Kelly has bulit the base and Jones has just followed him. IMO, that is a cause for concern on whether or not he can build a team on his own.

whoever is hired it will be interesting to see what happens and who they bring in

zook brought in larry fedora and charlie strong as oc and dc that sounds pretty awesome right? well it wasnt lol

One out of the box name that I can't help but be impressed with is Jerry Kill. Whether he can recruit at an elite level or not remains to be seen but he can flat out coach and I'm of the belief that at a school like UT if you can win recruits will follow. He has been successful everywhere he has been at from Saginaw Valley State, Emporia State, Southern Illinois, Northern Illinois, and now has Minnesota in a bowl game in his second year. Granted along with the recruiting concerns he does have health issues with seizures each of the last two years.

True, I think we can both agree though that some of the coaches people are making out be homerun hires though simply are not.

Yea I do agree on that. The only true homerun hires we could legitimately get are pipe dreams at best. Any coach we hire unless its someone like Carrol, Gruden, Saban, etc are going to be a risk. South Carolina and Alabama needed coaches at the perfect time. UT unfortunately is not that lucky.

What's up HG?

What would be the thoughts on Hue Jackson? This is the first I have heard his name. If it is an NFL guy, he would not be bad, along with Del Rio or Roman.

Sorry if someone already brought this up, but for those wanting Gary Patterson are you not worried he could want the Kansas State job?

Patterson is from Kansas, played at Kansas State. Bill Snyder may have only 2-3 years left, & if they win the National Championship this year I could see him retiring. I could easily see Patterson take that job if it becomes open & Kansas State would be stupid to not interview him if it did. That would be the right fit for him & that program.

He could of had the job the 1st time Snyder retired. I don't remember dates ir why, but he didn't take, or wasn't offered.

The Grudenites have me convinced. Put me down as a believer that Jon Gruden will be the next UT HC.

I sure hope they're right. :crossfingers:

Not mad at cha.

Good to see you bk posting.

Just wondering, but why do you believe it now?

I've been following the Gruden thread's since the beginning, a month or so ago, when the rumor started and the main handful of original "Grudenites" are longtime posters on VN who don't seem to have a reputation of trolling or making stuff up. I've believed for awhile to be honest but not really 100% with all the other talk going on against it.

And now it just feels like, after paying close attention to those threads and reading other sites, that there's way too much smoke for it not to be real. Many on VQ also have been told it's true and have shared their stories, similar to the guys on VN.

Until Gruden walks across the stage I won't truly 100% believe he's the new HC but I do 100% believe those posters aren't making stuff up and they have been told by folks who would know that Gruden is coming.

I certainly understand folks taking the opposite view of mine. I'm just saying, mark me down as a believer that Gruden is going to be the next UT HC.

I called LSU and aTm. You act as if I was far off on either.

Also that aTm team will make even more noise next year. Manziel is a young QB. It's the players first year under Sumlin. He'll get even more athletes in under him. Don't know why people think the SEC will all of sudden stop them. This is a very good football coach that beat Saban with much less overall talent top to bottom. Sumlin will be a rockstar as a football coach. LSU and Florida just have faster/better defenses so they could stop the spread better. Saban wouldn't stop Oregon either. He needs his younger players to step up quickly in the secondary(needs more athletes on the back end). Guys like Sunseri and Nick Perry would be exploited. Also Nico Johnson's pass coverage liabilities would be exposed.

You called UT as well. I never said the SEC would stop him. I said they will adjust and be more prepared. A&M loses their best WR, 3 OL , including 2 JR tackles that are high draft picks. They will lose their 6 best defensive players. So I dont know how you predict them to be better. Nico Johnson will be gone so it wont matter about him in coverage, he usually not in coverage in most games anyways , Mosley comes in. Secondary will be alot more athletic with Collins and Williams back there. Plenty of athletes in the backend just young. Its not like UT who is just awful back there.

They put up just as many yards on LSU. LSU and UF ran the ball alot more than Bama. The success rate wasnt any better than Bama's but it did run more time off the clock to keep A&M off the field. A&M was up in both of those games. They just couldnt hold. Bama just made the crucial mistakes at the end unlike those 2 teams

I never call my own team losing. That defense I'm witnessing along with the stupidity on offense is ridiculous.

Only name i hear from people that matter is Smart. Hart is tight lipped and gives very few people info. Hart will not be pushed around by boosters either. He will make the choice that HE believes is best. Basically, very good chance no one has a friggin clue what coach Hart will go after.

Thank you for all of your info, one question tho. How would Hart be able to dodge the pushing from the Boosters if 3 or 4 big time money guys were to say "hire coach A or coach B or we don't donate next season"?? Not that I think our boosters would do that but what would Hart's options be then??

Besides going back to his alma mater,I dont see why Patterson would take that job when he could get a more high profile job for alot more money.

Gotcha. I read it occasionally but just take the wait and see approach. I am too afraid to get my hopes up and be let down. lol
