Kirby Smart is a business decision to some degree as well. He would likely keep Sunseri on as DC in name only and take over the defense himself. Would save UT some of the buyout money they would owe. Most smart people would look at it as addition by subtraction by taking some of Alabama's defensive staff.

No, they wouldn't.

On a side note, I went to Soccer Tacos on Saturday night after the game and Chad Clifton was there at a table next to ours. Really good guy. My buddy and I said hi to him and talked football briefly. Then after his meal he came up to our table and said we really need to make a coaching change. We all mentioned Gruden but he didn't seem to have any inside info.

The 3-4 that saban/kirby runs seems to me like a D that will only work if you just have great talent. They don't have those 5 or 6 nfl ready guys this year and their d is getting exposed a little

Talent definitely helps the deficiencies in that scheme. I mean look at Cam at Auburn. He made up for a lot of the offensive scheme's problems. I'm sure there are more examples. UGA's 3-4 D works because of the talent they have as well. It takes some time to get that system fully implemented though. Look at UGA when they first moved to it, they struggled some.

Smart would disappoint me fully, and to keep Sal as DC would send me over the edge, but what to do? I'd have to support the hire.

My cousin is a booster. We were at this game back in '03, and he bought a hotdog at Neyland. Joker had 75 cents coming back to him and he told the girl to "keep the change." It was amazing.

He doesn't know who is going to be hired, but after 15 minutes, I convinced him that it was a Gruden.

TIFWIW.

What exactly is a big hire? Saban wasn't a big hire when he first came to LSU. Neither was Fulmer after he took over from Majors or Spurrier when he first came to Florida. I'm sure there are more examples but there are offensive and defensive coordinators out there that could be unforeseen big hires.

What is a proven coach? By my definition "proven" coaches are coaches like Saban, Spurrier, Brown, Stoops, Miles, etc...are coaches who have won conference and national championships. Those coaches are settled in at there schools and its unrealistic to think that they would leave their current programs. Maybe my definition of proven differs from others and semantics is the issue? I would like to see SEC experience on the resume.

What are we really looking for in our next coach?

Also, could someone start a separate thread with the possible coaching candidates (similar to how we do players in the recruiting forum) and break down those coaches strengths and weaknesses. I'd love to see who all is out there and also see the feedback on each. Too bad Rivals doesn't have a star ranking for coaches right?

Easiest thing would be to just head over to the coaching rumors and speculation forum.

My list. (Gruden ain't coming here.)

1.) Strong
2.) Patterson
3.) Taggart
4.) Kingsbury
5.) Tuberville

Not the most attractive, but probably the most realistic list I've seen.
