If they had a similar situation to ours when he was hired.. This is all hypothetical of course.. We all know none of them would have had Mike Hamilton as AD.. He would have gotten 3 years most places.. That first year was going to be bad no matter who was here.. That's why after i got to my 5th or 6th choice like Hamilton did, i would have named a interim and been done with it.. No way i give a guy that far down my list that much leverage to save a few recruits..
He also got 4 years.. Shula i don't think was down to about 60 scholarship players. It took this last class to finally get Tennessee back to 85.. It was a bad situation in a lot of ways.. We're still not 2 deep in SEC quality deep.. Not sure Dooley would ever get it there anyway.. Might take him another 3 years.. 5, 6 year rebuilds just don't happen anymore..Dooley and Shula walked into pretty similar circumstances.
3rd (or 4th coach) in 3 years.
Roster depleted by probation/coaching change attrition.
Scholarship limitations by probation / Scholarship limitations by new SEC rule.
Shula managed to beat Tennessee and won 10 games, before the text book thing took that season away, and was still fired partly because he never beat Auburn.

It would have been the right thing to do at the time.. Someone hit the panic button, thinking we were going to lose every recruit from that class.. They would have maybe lost a few, but not that many.. To get the right coach it would have been a small price to pay.. Get the right guy and these last two classes could have easily been top 10 or top 5.. Would have more than made up for losing a few that first year.. Just lump it in with all the rest of the bad decisions that caused us to arrive at where we're at...Interesting point that I hadn't considered. It would have given the AD a year to get the right coach and Kippy Brown could have gotten an on the job interview instead of the sham interview Hamilton gave him

I think Dooley knows he had to win one he wasn't supposed to this year.. I really have no idea which direction they're going to go here.. I will say if they don't announce something pretty soon, then you can look forward to another year of Dooley..I think he only got the 4th year because he beat us. If he went three years of losing to Tennessee and Auburn he would've got shown the door after year 3. If Dooley had beat Florida or Alabama this year pretty much everyone would want to give him another year too.
Bama lost 21 scholarship over 3 yeas (2002-2004)

And still won as many SEC games in one year as Dooley has in almost three. All have history of firing a coach when it's obvious that it's not working. Zook got 3 years and was 16-8 in the SEC. Shula got 4 and was 13-19 in the SEC. Gary DiNardo got 5 years at LSU and was 18-20 in the SEC. Auburn fired Terry Bowden after he went 1-5 in his 6th year with a 30-14 overall record.
Again, Derek Dooley is 4-17 in the SEC and people are still defending this fool.

Florida fired Zook after three years with over a 60% winning percentage because he lost to us and FSU.
Alabama gave Shula four years with slightly higher than 50%.
LSU and UGA haven't had a bad spell in the past few years so it's hard to say neither was great in the early nineties but I doubt either would go more than two or three years with Dooley's record.
There is no excuse for Tennessee to put up with 3 years of 11-19 and at the very best 19-19 football.
