Spurrier was surprised UT did not have a running back stay in to help block Clowney.

First off Tiny did a great job on Clowney for most of the day! But, the only way you dont help Tiny right there is if you are going to run right at Clowney. Clowney got a great jump, and teed off like he new we were going to pass. Clowner is a beast, 1st round draft pick. You have to have a back or te chip him in that situation regardless of what happened previous to that point. We were in too good of a position at that point in the game. You can't take that kind of chance, and it beat us!

“I thought Tennessee would tell that back to wait on him inside, but he stayed on the outside,” Spurrier said.
Clowney, who combines power and speed in a 6-foot-6, 256-pound frame, also expected to be chipped by a running back.

Just a stretch here but perhaps we didn't ask the rb to stay in and help block perhaps the best defensive player in the country on the most critical play of the game because we don't have a real coach?

Yeah I am going with maybe our defense should have stepped up for once out of 5 SEC games and not yet again put our offense in that position anyway? Just my thought on it.

Tiny handled him one on one all day.
Great players can step it up a notch when the game is on the line.
Clowney did.
Someday we'll have some of those.

So the running back stayed in to block--but failed to see or block Clowney. Is that what happened? Did he block anybody? I would say that if you are a RB and charged with staying in the backfield and blocking, you should know where Clowney is, no? We failed in the spot--just as we have failed in big spots in three of last four games offensively. Bray also failed to throw the ball expeditiously--and that often leads to trouble.

Tiny dominated him all day. And the last thing Spurrier is qualified to speak to is pass protection. Charges should be brought on him for what he did to Patrick Ramsey.

SMFH. Who gives a damn that Dooley got a sideline penalty. You know it was a bull**** call just like the horse collar was a bull**** call.

Come on don't let facts get in the way on blaming everything on DD.

And the horse collar call was DD's fault too. They should have been coached up not to tackle anywhere near the collar. Can't you guys see that everything is the coaches' fault?

Proud of the O line. They did an awesome job. Proud of Zach Rogers, guys turned it around this year. Disappointed in Hunter. Some drops and I'm tired of seeing the pansy hit the deck instead of taking a hit and tryin to shake free! As usual, our D royally sucked. Letting SC score on a 3rd n 26 is terrible.

This is an accurate surmise. Withholding the fact that coached really let the team down this game multiple times.

We shouldn't be blaming that on anyone and should be giving Clowney credit for a great play. Tiny dominated him all day and got beat by a future NFL player. Tyler did not hold the ball (or was a statue as someone said). He did his drop and was stepping into his throw. Clowney blew by Tiny and Bray didn't stand a chance.

Great players make great plays in big situations (said many times on here). Unfortunately, the big play came from USCe instead of UT.

you said it perfectly.

At the start of that drive, the guy next to me said something like "y'all have done a number on Clowney today" and I said "yeah, but he's only got to get there one time." :banghead2:

Yes, the defense ultimately lost the game. I recall a number of reasonable voices (I was one) who stated that, like Georgia, UT's defense would likely take a step back during the change to 3-4. Not sure why anyone is surprised. Offense played lights out. O line was beaten on one critical play. Show me another team that had held Clowney in check as well as UT this season.

Agree with most everything you said but, this defense didn't take a step back. It took a huge leap back and there is not excuse for it being THIS bad. Growing pains? Yes. Ridiculously horrible? Nope, it shouldn't be.
