Public Service Announcement--Dooley

That's cool and all, but the whole dooley taking a job no one wanted thing is a little off. It was a HUGE promotion for him and he's made alot of money. I wish him the best

Who in their right mind wouldn't have taken his offer. He became an instant multi millionaire without ever having to win a game. He will be paid $5M if he gets fired. Not saying he hasn't given his all but he basically had nothing to lose taking this job..

 Agree. "Naïve" was the word that came to mind for me. Perhaps their only experience in the work place has been as an "at will employee"? I suspect if said posters had an employment contract, I doubt they would leave $$$ on the table upon termination.

LOL, c'mon man you know they would give that money back. I mean why would anyone worry about the finicial stability of their family when they could just be a cool guy and give up that cash.

Good OP, totally agree.

I knew these kind of forums were coming. I was a fence guy until we lost to Florida and more importantly Miss St. I firmly believe Dooley can not take us where we want to go and I believe firing him is the right decision. That said, I see no point to trashing DD in any way. The University is terminating the contract and we all move on. Dooley gets well compensated and we hopefully get a better coach. That's all there is to it. Thanks DD for the VFL program and the rebuilding effort you gave. Now let's go get Chucky Big Jim!

Finally some sense written on this forum. A couple of weeks ago I was in Dooleys corner hoping he would be the one to turn us around still. I have since changed my mind about Dooley being the one for the job but I have respect for the man and appreciate what he has done for UT. I believe he does want to win and turn the team around. I hope the best for Dooley, whatever he does after UT. Thanks for taking the time to write something on this forum actually worth reading.

Derek Dooley's a great person in the most difficult football conference in the USA, but that being said, no one is judging the man.... only his football accomplishments. Do I feel sorry for coach Dooley, yes indeed, I wanted him to succeed and make UT relevent once again. Fans that belittle him or his family are trash and should be recognised as such. I'm personally still behind him as long as he is our coach. I will disagree with others that think coach Dooley will be able to bring UT back to a championship caliber team. The question we have to ask is what level or place finish we are able to accept....it apears some are fine with where we are. I simply don't see the progress after almost 3 years, maybe some do.

That's my point exactly. I like this post, but the idea of praising dooley for taking a job "few wanted" seems off to me. Dooley was probably drooling over this job.

I'm probably a little in the minority on this, but my graciousness will be restrained for someone who is taking the University to the tune of $5M not to coach.

I'd have no ill will towards him as a person, but the admirable thing to do would have been to step down and admit it didn't work out and negotiate a settlement. Perhaps that's what (will) happen, though I don't have confidence it will.

bs...he was hired to coach for 5 years...ut may be breaking that contract...that is what a buyout is for....he deserves every dime of it....nobody and i mean nobody knows what could happen in the next two years if dooley stays and people and media get off his arse..so he could recruit with the other sec schools he has to compete aginst.....and remember..nobody wanted this job..including Gruden, Muschamp, Peterson among a few....

Good post but I wouldn't be so fast to shut the door on Dooley just yet. Let's be realistic Phil overstayed his welcome, he became to complacent & coached not to lose rather than coaching to win, did a terrible job scouting talent & let the state's top prospects go elsewhere in his last few years. We bring in Lane who stays a season & leaves which brings about more attrition. We then reach out to Gruden, Muschamp & a few other top tier coaches who all laugh in our face & at our job because they knew this wouldn't be a quick fix. The program was in it's worst state ever then here comes Dooley, he takes a job that nobody wants & quite frankly wasn't as appealing as we Vol fans believe. Dooley has busted his ass for our university & all we do is complain. I'll say this we have the most depth & the most talent we've had in at least 5 years & that's thanks to Dooley in his staff. Tn football program is in far better shape than it was when Dooley took the job.

Volnation and guests,

I want to take the time and thank everyone for being such avid supporters of Tennessee Athletics through the good and the bad.

As a fan and member of Volnation I see the impact this forum and forums related have on influence and morale of the fanbase. Things (Rumors) that are introduced here stir up some of the conversations that make national headlines. That being said, look at how Kiffin left the program and the response that followed, a riot in front of media that turned the state in an unconscionable matter. How could someone bring so much hope to the program and leave faster than a thief in the night. How could someone walk away from this great institution? Well, regardless of his motives, which are immaterial, the University was distraught and had no direction to turn. Faced with enormous budget cuts and numerous NCAA investigations, involving Kiffin and Pearl, the Athletic Department was under huge pressure.

Who knows what coaches were contacted for the head coaching job. We can speculate all day, no one will know, but what we do know is Derek Dooley took the job. Now, for everyone who is already opinionated and wants Dooley gone, I understand and by no means do I disagree. However, I want this forum and fans to realize that the way they act toward Dooley will have an everlasting impact on this program. Meaning, have some CLASS. When Dooley gets fired, do not post Facebook posts trashing the man or belittle him in posters. The man gave his all for TENNESSEE and yes, he failed, yes, he did not win games, but is any one perfect at their job, everyone makes mistakes. When Dooley is let go, applaud the man. We were competive this year against teams all ranked in the Top 15. We have the best O-line in the country. Best receivers in the country. Our talent has improved EVERY YEAR. To come to a conclusion, have some respect for the man who gave up what he had where he was comfortable, have courage enough to take a gig in a league that is probably the most criticized in all of football. Show some gratitude and stand up and THANK COACH DOOLEY FOR TAKING A JOB, few wanted. We will be back in national prominence and Coach Dooley was the foundation that got us there.

Thank you, Volnation

Now this makes me proud to be a Vol. Well said. GBO

Why on earth should we thank him? UT gave him a HUGE opportunity and he has failed. He should thank UT and this fan base for allowing him the HUGE honor of walking the same sidelines General Neyland walked. No sir, I'll not thank him for failing.

Huh? I guess people who work hard and make mistakes are just jerks and should just go screw themselves. Brilliant.

besides his regular salary (i wouldn't give him his breakfast for what he could get done all day long), i think the 5 million dollar buyout/payoff is far more thanks than he deserves.

Why? Because some people have bought into this garbage about how nobody wanted the job but Dooley and think you should thankful.......it's total BS.

Sums up my feelings.

He's a millionaire who isn't that good at his job, he could've atleast gone .500 in the SEC. I respect him a lot. It takes major nerves to even consider an SEC job. He knew the risk but never got the reward. I hope he is successful in his career. As fans we have our opinions , respect is our duty.

The thing that should have been done is negotiate a contract commensurate with the coach's ability. Don't blame Dooley because UT hired the wrong man or signed a lucrative contract that was not in UT's interest. Blame UT if you have to find fault. Your best bet is to forget it, take your lumps and move on.

Many years ago UT was known as Linebacker U. The last generation or so we enjoyed the label Wide Receiver U.

Thanks to Mike Hamilton, we are now tragically referred to as Buyout U. Green, Hamilton, Fulmer, Pearl, Raleigh - and of course, Hamilton himself.

People came unglued over Fulmer's 6 mil buyout and he was one of the most successful coaches in school history. But that ridiculously pales in comparison to a 5 mil payout to someone who has never beaten a ranked team in 6 years of head coaching. That kind of guarantee would ordinarily be bestowed on someone with a championship or two under their belt.

Did Dooley demand such a huge parachute because he was leaving a swell gig at LaTech? Or was it just an extra 'sweetner' that Hamilton defaulted to, making negotiations all the smoother? No doubt it wasn't examined all that much at the time.

When you get down to your 5th or 6th choice you should just punt... Hamilton needed a tire patch and he got it.. It came with a expensive price tag though.. Another really bad decision by the UTAD under Hammy...

I've always said Dools seems like a good person, but he's in over his head. If you can't compete with the best, you need to move on when it comes to the SEC.

I'll say it AGAIN! It was a win/win for Dooley. If he succeeds,he's a millionaire. If he fails,he's still a millionaire.
