Thats not the point. First it was more than likely Monday, now they are covering their butts by saying he could coach Troy. Then Sunday, they can say well, they have decided to wait until the end of the year.
I do understand though if its true and Gruden is really taking his NCAA test after NOV 1, that would make sense to wait. But someone said mid to late november and that makes no sense to me if the job is going to a guy not coaching. Just hesitant to believe anything at this point
Personally, I don't think the whole deal makes much sense, even if I am inclined to believe it is true. Here is why.
1) firing or removing a coach at this point in the season basically just concedes defeat for the remainder of the games. It can demoralize the team and could make UT miss a bowl game for another year. That only hurts the perception of the program and recruiting.
2) if what everyone is saying is true, that being that the boosters are all either forcing this on Hart or doing it with his consent but by back channels, there is still no reason to fire the current staff until the replacement could effectively take over. That isn't likely to be this season, regardless of who the replacement is.
3) Even IF Gruden, or Jesus himself, could take over the team mid season, the likelihood of having much success is slim to none. The change would be so destabilizing that it would likely end in tears, regardless. That would do more to hurt the replacement coach in the eyes of the fan base. What happens if Gruden comes in, loses a few games this year and we miss a bowl game with our savior at the helm? Some UT fans would start to lose faith, again starting with the "he lost to (insert team here) what has he done to show me that he can win?"
In conclusion the whole idea that the BEST course of action is to fire Dooley now, promote an interim coach, and get Gruden signed makes no sense to me. If Gruden is interested, and a deal has been brokered that he agreed to, just tell him that Dooley is out at the end of the season and it will be announced after either the Kentucky game or the bowl game if there is one. That is the option with the best balance of potential for success, fewer question marks and long term sustainability in my humble view.
