Official Jon Gruden Thread III

The man won a Superbowl using NFL players and he's a broadcaster on ESPN, what's so amazing?

It's the fact that he won that Super Bowl with NFL players against other NFL players. Also, the reason that his commentary role is valuable is the ability to convey his goals with recruits and their parents, but also the ability to convey the plays and schemes to his players.

the report is bama makes 6x what Saban's salary is costing them off of him being there. You don't see that as a sound investment?

He came with a NC from LSU then shortly procured one for Bama. I absolutely see the opportunity for it to all pan out but I also see that NC's seem to have a lot to do with dirty recruiting and paying players as much as it does paying coaches.

Yes! Also, Gruden will not coach the Panthers. If he goes NFL there will be better opp's. He shamed Cam Newton during QB camp before draft. Those 2 wouldnt be a good combo

Because they're winning championships. Thrash appears to have some reservations because Gruden basically has no college experience. Justified, IMO

Maybe, but if we have to hire somebody, out of all the names available, would you not agree that Gruden is worth the risk? Over the likes of Strong, Smart, Patterson, etc.

Serious question.

I firmly believe this deal is done pending a signature. I believe there is an understanding between both as to what is going to happen. I have seen or heard nothing that I consider reputable to change this.

so the signature will be there when DD is officially out? Is that only detail left undone in Gruden talks?

I will certainly agree that nothing anybody has said on here or in the media would condradict what you say here.

It's definitely not that I don't think he should be the guy.

It's just that I don't think he's so far above all the other possible candidates we could pursue to justify a 10 year contract, and possibly making him instantly the highest paid NCAA coach in the country.

Luckily, since Hammy's gone, his buyout shouldn't exceed $2M or so. Guess what Saban's buyout is...

Warmish climate, and a QB with elite potential, ready to be coached up? Why is it a bad fit?

and people like me aren't? I've read plenty of posts from people with sources in the 2+ Gruden threads and have made my own evals on who has info and who is simply regurgitating what others have said. Some have a history and some don't. However I don't feel the need to call any of them out (except for the ones that have trolled VN before).

Like I said earlier, enjoy the ride and take it for what it is. You'll be much happier

Has anyone considered his kids? Maybe he wants to coach his son in college.
I had thought about that several times and kept waiting for someone to mention it. It could be possible that the family situation (in-laws living here, coaching his son) are more appealing to Jon than some people realize.

Here's the thing about boosters. They aren't created equal, even among the very upper levels of giving. It may come as a surprise to some, but there are loads of boosters who give $75k or $100k to the University every year who have no involvement whatsoever with issues like this, and get no "inside" info about it. There is no double-secret email list you get put on once you cross a certain threshold of giving. The people who would be involved with this issue and may have knowledge about it are a very small handful of the very top boosters, i.e., the guys who were sitting with Peyton and perhaps a few others that you could count on one hand, or certainly both hands. So when Hyams or whoever says he talked with "a pretty significant booster" it may mean something, or it may well mean nothing at all.

This booster gives way more than that. Will not say any more about them. Just that they are not a low level but at a high level. Not a Haslem or a Thorton level.

When you get on here with insider info you open yourself up for posters to evaluate your connections. I am certainly not calling you a liar but just trying to decide the validity of your sources. I certainly believe with what I know now that you may very well be spot on here. I won't blindly follow anyone on here. That doesn't mean I am on a witch hunt.

Spot on....I never accused anyone if a witch hunt, or shirked the scrutiny. I have one guy who has a personal beef with me. That's ok.

You are welcome to question or doubt. You should. It doesn't mean I'll give you my source, or where his info comes from.

Probably one you could count on two hands however.

Yeah I understand that, but I think it's a question worth asking... what would he be like as a college coach? Pete Carroll was obviously a huge success at USC. What about Bill Callahan? I know Gruden's profile > theirs, but still a legitimate question. Especially for the $$$ being thrown out there.

This is precisely why I'm inclined to believe that Tennessee is about to drop the big bucks. If you've been paying attention, Hart's hinted at this:

"... we have to do it with urgency."

"Each year that those disadvantages remain on the table, you set yourselves back."

"So nobody's more upset, believe me. I just can't display it like some people can."

Not in question:
Whether DD will be fired.
Whether the AD will pony up big bucks

The only question is who it will be. I have my fingers crossed for Gruden.

We will have to agree to disagree. Recruting is much more work than preparing for the draft. Then add dealing with boosters and baby sitting kids with academic issues and that more than makes up for the less time on the practice field. College if anything is more time IMO.

Recruiting focuses your attention on 50 players max & you are competing and trying to guess the intentions of perhaps 5 other schools.

draft prep requires looking at 100s of players and guessing the intentions of 32 other teams plus evaluating it ***ainst filling needs with free agents. Drafts are much more in depth than recruiting.

even if you call that a wash, NFL has combines, free agency prep, OTA, Mini-Camp, a pre-season twice as long as college and a 30-60 day longer regular season.

think about just away games. college coach leaves Friday afternoon or saturday morning for a game. gets home saturday night then sunday does his show and spends the day at home or with family. 2 hr practice monday morning then the players are gone for the day. He does this 4-5x/year.

nfl coach leaves his house saturday morning for a game. doesn't get back till late Sunday night, then goes back to the office to prepare film for Monday morning & prepping for the next week. Players are there all day reviewing film. Tuesday & Wednesday is practice & game planning. It's Thursday before he sees his family. He does this 8-10x/year.

I guess I wouldnt say it's a bad fit, just cant see him and Cam together. Cam doesnt appear to be a student of the game that I would think Gruden wants in QB, I could b way off. I would think Cleveland would be better fit especially if they can get Barkley. I dont think Dallas would be because of JJ but he would do well in that situation too. Jets would be possible too. I think he's UT bound anywy.
