Chaney

I bet Chaney would look better on a different team (one with a competent head coach and with players who took their game seriously).

Dooley admitted on Vol talk last night that the 3&1 call before the failed 4th down conversion was his call. He told Chaney to call it. So there goes the idea it's all Chaney when it's both of them.
It doesn't matter about the facts .Guys will do or say anything to Defend Dooley's great Coaching even if it's blame his coordinators.

Has it been confirmed that Cdd didn't have to keep Chaney when he was hired??? I know many like finding blame with Dooley wherever it could be found but do you really think that it's easy to come in 10 days to signing day and having to replace both coordinators??? Seriously?? Chaney had been on campus, and knew recruits etc. Come on people! Y'all want every one to take the orange tinted Dooley glasses off, but y'all have the Red tinted Dooley hating glasses on.

I go back and forth on Chaney. Sometimes I feel some calls he makes are done cause he has been put in that place by the players not executing previous plays correctly. Putting him behind the 8 ball per se. I understand that happens but tends to happen to much for us. Just like people think the players have lost faith in the coaches, but it can go both ways.

I've said this many times before but imo this O was suppose to hide the Ds issues in this yrs 3-4 transition. I think the O has been doing good but it was thought to be AMAZING and it's just been good. IMO mainly due to mistakes that would have kept us moving forward. Ie 3 and out after the D stopped a fake punt try by UF. The D has had its struggles, and the O pretty much said thanks but no thanks to them. Now go back out there with no rest and stop them. Smh.

I don't like Chaney. I never have. His play calling is very suspect IMO.

However,

-no one else has scored 31 on MS State
-no one else has scored 44 on Georgia
-no one else has scored 20 on Florida
-only 2 other teams have scored more than 13 on Bama, and both times it was 14

Offense is not the problem here.

:good!: Nail on the head!! Our defense is not good. If it was we wouldn't have a gruden thread. First year of a new defense. think next year is the year of sustantial progress. This year is playing out like everyone predicted.

I think what we are saying there is...

These are better teams that we are playing. So throwing long on third and 1 is somewhat like an on-side kick. We are trying to trick them with a big play.

So down deep, Dools and/or Chaney know we probably can't move it down the field. So they are hoping to get a big quick strike with a bomb on third and one

That is crap. Our offense has shown they can move the ball. With the exception of the AL game and even then they showed flashes of being able to move the ball.

Ok, I do not like that we have thrown long on 3rd and 1 several times. But as someone said, if that works...you are a genius.

Yes, the series where AJ ended up getting stuffed on fourth down was a complete mess.

I had no problem with the throw downfield on 3rd and 1 on Bama's side of the 50. You expect their defense to be looking for the run and crowding the LOS, so you naturally assume that is your best shot to get your WR in a ojne on one with no help from a safety, and since you are on their side of the field you still have 4th down, and with the way your OL has been performing you expect they can get you the 1 yd on 4th down. My issue was running the Wildcat on 4th down. If it does't work, you don't have another down to make it up. Bama had already seen it once that day, and had seen it on film, and knows it is fairly one-dimensional. On 4th and short I want the QB under the center, with a RB and a blocking back behind him. You've got someone who sees the opposing D on every down and knows how to read what they are doing and can adjust the play as necessary, or call a TO and regroup if needed.

I think one of Dooley's first mistakes was keeping one of Kiffin's hire. Kiffin made all the calls when he was coach. Is it Chaney's play calling or the players. I thought it was Chaney's calling. When you have a 3rd and 3 and throw the ball down field 25 yards incomplete is a bunch of bull. Pick up a first down with a short pass and keep our defense off the field. Against Alabama we had a 3rd and 1 we have to call a time out. Bray then throws the ball over the sideline. Then we come back and run AJ who Alabama knows what he is going to do and we get stuffed 2 yards behind the line.

Agreed...unbelievable with our improved run game.

I could have sworn I heard Blackledge say during Bama game something about blah, blah "why I think Jim Chaney is one of the best offensive coordinators"... blah, blah, blah....

Huh?!?!

You need a dependable short passing game to have a good offense: That is something Chaney doesn't get. You don't throw high risk 20 yard passes when you need 3 yards to make a first. Manning and Brady never do it for a reason--you lower you chances of completing the pass. They throw 5 or 7 yard passes, make the first and continue the drive. Smart football vs. dumb football.

YES!!!

Two many low percentage plays , 3 and out. D then gives up a score. A sustained drive , then a low percentage play or two and punt. Defense gives up a score. Boom , explosive play ...we score. Defense gives up a score.

Would make alot more sense to try to score on all three drives by ball control high percentage passes and running and keep our D off the field. Might win one that way.

You do realize Hamilton forced any coach we hired to keep Chaney, right? Whoever was the new coach was going to be forced to have Chaney as OC

The offense isn't the problem, it's the defense. Namely, Sal Sunseri

& probably in large part our talent on D. He needs to really dumb down the D especially if the blitzes don't get pressure & the guys covering are all over the field nowhere near an opposing player. Even when coverage is pretty good they can't make the play. Big plays have killed us all year whether its blown coverage, guys out of position, missed tackles, not making plays that are there, & just flat out getting outran.

Might I add Chaney's play calling is probably influenced a lot by being down 3 or 4 scores.

on the 3rd down and short yardage plays,i don't mind going for a long pass play, but it is being called way to often, the run game has improved enough to go for a running play.and mix in a the long pass play every now and again, not all the time

Cheney was not a DD hire or want probably . Chaney was off the table according to NONE other than Hamilton . Please I think we need to replace our head coach , but , Lets not try to re-write history .
