1. So he can resign and not be fired.
2. So he can leave now and not have to go through the indignity of being a lame duck coach for the rest of the season.
3. To avoid any potential long, protracted litigation over his alleged breaches of contract (such as contact with UNC concerning their opening two years ago, etc.).

1. This is Big Boy business, resign/fired all the same any school out there would know the story before approching him about an opening.

2. What indignity? That gives him time to show he can or cannot coach.

3. UT would have had to act then, would not be applicable now.

My question is if that is the case why wait until after this game to announce it?

He probably's been told that what he's done this season isn't cutting it and he's on his last thread.

Just can't see a AD telling a Coach he is canned but then says, but don't say anything to the media and go out and act like everything is fine and coach while I work on your replacement.

Do people not realize how dumb that sounds?

I see what your saying. In watching him everyday at practice, his demenor towards Sal, and how he is during press conferences along with other stuff leads me to this notion.

Looking at the link back list for this thread . . . I'd like to welcome all our visitors from Tennessee Deer Talk. And, no . . . I'm not kidding. That really is a website.

Last night I talked to a former all american offensive lineman who does some radio work in Knoxville. He is saying that a Gruden hire is just a rumor, same as four years ago. The only reason there is more conversation about it today is because more people want Dooley gone than wanted Fulmer gone 4 years ago.

Another guy I know in Memphis who is heavy into fundraising for UT in that city also agrees with that assessment.

I think all we know for sure is that Gruden would be interested in taking a look at UT. But then again he's dropped that line about so many other jobs in the past that you'll have to decide how much stock to invest in that.

As far as what Ainge says, I lost a lot of respect for him after the garbage he said on the air prior to the Bama game. He's a drug addict and I think he'll say anything to be considered relevant and get in on this action.

I would almost certainly think that if UT is firing Dooley that they would not just target ONE person as his replacement. This is another reason I put little stock in this whole Gruden thing. I think if Dooley was being fired there would be smoke coming from other camps as well, not just the Gruden camp.

If Dooley gets fired, and that's a big if because it could cost the university between 6 and 9 million dollars to get rid of him and his staff, the most likely scenario is that it would not be announced until the end of the season. If it were announced after the USC game, I would fully expect him to be allowed to finish out the season and if that happens there is almost no chance of UT announcing his replacement prior to Dooley's exit (meaning the end of the season).

I think that's the most rational way to look at this now.
Wow. He WAS a drug addict. And now he's clean. He's also a helluva lot more relevant than you are.

No, your made up fantasy doesn't make me wrong.

IF somehow we beat South Carolina and then Fire Dooley on Monday I will ban myself for 2 weeks from Volnation and miss the Gruden celebration.

It just won't happen that way.

We beat SC they will wait until Dooley loses a game later in the year...if that happens.

If Dooley fate was really "decided" they wouldn't give him a chance to win this game this weekend.

Do you not see how your "theory" is wrong/flawed.

This!!!

Hammy fired Fulmer so that we might lose to Wyoming and not be bowl eligible. It made his decision look better at the time.

Ok some news I got. Second hand so TIFWIW.

A friend who works at Auguata National said he talked to a big booster who is a member there (I do not know who he is or how big) and he said that he has not heard anything about a buyout or gruden coming. But if they called he would write a check.

My take on it is, DH knows he can get the money. So keep it quite as possible and get the $$$ after the deal is done.

Just passing along info.

Go Vols!!!

This was my opinion before yesterday's "release."

We live in an instant gratification age, like it or not, and with the amount of anonymity afforded by such a forum as VN, there is no accountability to be had for those willing to share as long as they do not filet their friends. There is also no accountability for making things up, however for this to be a rouse it would be elaborate to the point of hilarity, not even possible imo.

The other problem with an instant gratification age is that people are eager to get information out there fast. Even if the information is not entirely made up, I worry that it is being rushed and is the information most likely to fall through for whatever reason.

I'm with GAVol on this one. I do believe Tennessee is interested in Gruden, and vice versa. I just don't believe at all that an agreement of any kind has been reached with a head coach still employed and 9-4 still a possibility (though clearly a very unlikely possibility).

He can't conatact recruits if the staff is full. OSU was short a coach and thats the reason Urb was allowed to do so. Thus interimn named, Dooley gone, position open.

Are you sure the OHS wasn't a full staff??

I know they has an interim but it was that way all year. I assume they filled the extra staff spot with another coach before the year started

I believe Dooley has been told he will not be the coach next year. I also believe that Gruden has not signed or agreed to anything yet. I think that's the most realist assumptions anyone can truly make.

That site is pretty hilarious at times. I'm shocked some of the photos posted there aren't seen more on the interwebs

"Ainge IS a drug addict". What is wrong with you? Where are you haters coming from? Oh yeah we are on the internet where the sleaze come out to play.

That drug addict is more keyed into whats going on than a lot of other local radio people that have been here a lot longer. That's why he gets more $$$ to advertise on his show than about any other local radio personality.

Certain that is the only way Meyer was allowed to recruit.

Boro, did you see this quote by Hymns

“I do believe that Jon Gruden has talked to some coaches in an effort to put together his staff. The question is: is he doing that for the collegiate level or the NFL level? But I do believe that he has talked to some coaches with the intent to put together a staff to get back into coaching, in spite what he is making at Monday Night Football.”
Yes....and doesn't matter. I told you guys a week ago when this.news starting coming out what would happen. Media would deny it, rumors would grow, haters would ridicule....and the smoke would cover it all.

Be patient....this is not going to be confirmed soon. Dooley is gone, and has known it for over a week. Jimmy Sexton was shopping him for staff jobs over 2 weeks ago. He made his situation more difficult with his public blowup with Hart in the AD earlier this week. They want to negotiate the buyout based upon his actions toward UNC last year. He is balking....so they are going to let him sit. He's under contract and therefore cannot publicly seek other employment. He's going to made to sit and answer the questions, and smile on the TV shows, until the season is over or he decides to negotiate.

Gruden is done. Believe it or not, I don't care. We won't get confirmation until sometime in November, possibly not until after the UK game. The timeline we discussed last week hasn't changed very much. The deal was agreed to in principle last week. My guess is that yesterdays info may have involved the finalizing of certain details that may have been in question. Hang in there and enjoy it.
