I would think Strong could be considered proven. He knows the SEC adn has turned Louisville around in under 3 years. Gruden isn't proven at the college level. He just brings star power.

he's coaching in the Big East though. 7-6 records past 2 years. I don't c anything that just blows me away on his resume. This year they are undefeated but the only major win I see is UNC

He has been in the sec and is known as a great recruiter here in the south. He's no sure thing I know. I think Gruden would make the biggest splash in the short term but Strong would be better for the long haul. That's just my thoughts though.

In college, sometimes a big splash is what's best for the long haul. If he gets momentum to the program and wins some games next year and gets an elite recruiting class, then it snowballs.

I believe that's partially responsible for Saban's success at Bama. He had this reputation after his MNC at LSU, and after a couple years of great recruiting, and winning some games, the program and his reputation sold themselves. Now he just cruises along with elite recruiting year after year.

Obviously there's more to it than that, though.

I really think more and more that the Saban comparison is a good one. A coach coming down from the NFL, although Saban is still more of a college guy. Saban had a decent talent base started by the time he got there, and he just kick started it.

I think Strong is an excellent recruiter, excellent X's and O's guy, and he is proving he can win in a place that is not exactly a powerhouse.

Given the UT brand, and all of the recruiting advantages that come with it (new football complex, fan base, SEC, etc) I would think that he could put a winning team on the field immediately, and would contend for the SEC east immediately.

If I were a long time UT fan, I would probably want to go with someone who was an assistant here in good times: (Chavis, Cutcliffe) and I would stay away from a guy with minimal College experience, even though he spent a couple years here as a grad asst (Gruden)

The heart of a head coach is transferred onto his players. It means a lot. When the coach truly cares about what he is doing, and about his players, it shows in recruiting, and then shows on the field. I dont think Gruden has a college heart.
