Apparently my attempt to provide information to the football/chaos forum turned into a d!ck measuring contest. Anyway, it's true, I've been told an offer of 6-years $31.5 is on the table. Hart has been in touch with Gruden's agent, Lamonte. I've been told that this is the first number put on the table by UT. Seems like it's a strong offer and shows UT is serious about Gruden. Also, this is the first I've heard that Dooley is a lame duck.

This. I don't care how much he's won. Petrino is the last person I would want to coach this team.

Which is about right for someone who hasn't proven to be an elite college coach, only pro. Saban had already proven it at LSU. I don't care what any of you say, college is a different ball game than NFL, not harder or easier, just different and takes a different skill set. IF this rumor is true and that's the offer, I think it's paying more for his name recognition than his actual football coaching ability.

Coughlin is more proven than Gruden in the NFL, does that mean colleges should pay him $6mil+ to come coach? No, it's a different game, different animal. If Gruden weren't on MNF, people wouldn't think $5mil is not enough. He's just the coach everyone has heard of, so everyone assumes he's the best.

That said, the buzz he generates would indeed put orange-clad butts in seats at Neyland, at least initially, and that's something to consider. I think that alleged offer is MORE than enough though for an unproven college coach.

Guess your e-cred is on the line. I think we'd all be happy with the hire, although I don't think he's as slam dunk as people say, and I think he'll jet to the pros before his contract is up, leaving us with yet another coaching change, albeit in a better overall situation than the previous couple we've had.

Just an example, but that could get him close to $6.0 mill.

I think it would take him 3 years minimum, even if he were as good as everyone assumes he will be, to catch up to Saban.

And I still think that's where he'll end up, not in college.

Unless his buyout for leaving is huge, I think the pro teams would come calling with more money than we have, if he's successful.

I will say this:

If theoretically, Dooley is out this year, the players will essentially have had three staffs in three years with the new guy. Looking at the schedule, it will be rough. Gonna be hard to get back to recruiting where we need to be with the team most likely underperforming due to yet another introduction of offense/defense. The growing pains on defense?... there will be more. Then, growing pains on offense. A new coach wins maybe 6 games next year. The fanbase will continue to be irate... full circle.

I think Gruden is really the only choice that most every Vol fan would be pleased with. And I think, more than anything, that we need someone who will unite this fractured fan base right now. It has sucked being this divided and squabbling amongst ourselves the past five years about who the right guy would be.

If he was here a few years and won big then decided he wanted to go pro; no big deal.

Even if we win out, I need to see some major changes on defense. I don't know if it takes a new DC or a change of scheme, but we can't win games giving up the plays/points we're giving up.

I personally just talked to 2 men who have/will donate 2.5 million to the university. That is just 2 guys putting 5 million together, think of all the other boosters that will donate to the coache's' salaries. I asked them if they had heard any names being mentioned and they said Gruden... it was a short quick response. They said there was going to be a boosters meeting either next week or week after.

I think recruiting will be just fine if our players get some capable coaching and a head football coach who is not a lazy recruiter.

Not making anything up. According to Hubbs, Derek Dooley has not attended a single high school football game for any prospect in his time here.

Nope, still making things up as that does not necessarily mean that he is a "lazy recruiter" as it could just be that he sees better uses of his time to improve the team especially seeing how high school and college football season are at the same time.
