Of the openings you listed, Tennessee and Auburn are clearly the top 2. You could probably make a case for either.

@wesrucker247: UT spent a TON on facilities past few years. Buying out Dooley/staff would cost at least $8 mill or so. Not sure where $ would come from.

Was thinking similarly about the spurrier-scar situation. Knew it took him some time to get it going.

Patience is a virtue. Just not one exhibited by our fanbase.

Granted spurrier has a ring he could point to as evidence of a proven track record

Hope Dooley can win one of the next two and solidify things

Do most here think it is too late for Dooley to save himself??

The Jimmy Sexton part of this "rumor" makes no sense to me. If UT were to make a move at the end of the season, I would bet my last dime that Dooley would not negotiate even 1 cent off of his buyout. Nobody in their right mind would.

If I were Dooley I would immediately do anything I could to get a rope around Sal. Yes, we expected some "growing pains", but what we have is a complete implosion of our defense that goes way beyond "growing pains" and is inexcusable. Sal is in over his head, imo, and if Dooley wants to keep his job he has to do something drastic and do it now.

I have wondered if Sal might have Hiestand's problem -- so much screaming and cussing the players that he is ineffective as a coach. Perhaps at Alabama Smart and Saban helped him "toned down" a bit so he was effective. Also he might just be a bad choice to be a DC -- a great position coach but does not have what it takes to be DC.

its not just the lack of winning which Dooley definately hasnt done. its the way we look on the football field. the mistakes we make. the lack of discipline. players quitting. lack of adjustments. lack of creativity. the coaching staf revolving door. its a train wreck and it is embarrassing.

All we hear from the players is praise for Sal and how they have all the respect in the world for him. The players know that if they execute Sal's D that it can be great. We've seen glimpses, like in the 3rd quarter Sat night.

Damn give the guy some time. I'd like for the players to actually KNOW the defense fully, and well enough to execute it, before we kick Sal out the door. Sal is very highly respected around the coaching industry. Same with Dooley. If people can just be patient I think both will bring Tennessee a lot of success.

My worst fear is we get rid of this staff and then push back our program even further. We have 7 new coaches on this staff, ALL are highly respected, I would love to see what they can accomplish.

To an extent, I agree with you. My problem with Sal is that he has been DC long enough to where the defense should be better than to literally be "on a pace to be the all time worst defense in the SEC" (per KNS article). Something is wrong for that to be the case, imo. Yes, Sal is well respected and rightfully so, but he earned that respect as a position coach, not a DC. Right now, I think his ability to be a DC is very much in question, Dooley has to step in to make things work better on defense.

As for Dooley, I am inclined to keep him -- I believe that if you look at what he has done in context with where the program was when he got here, he has done an amazing job, especially with raising the talent level through sound recruiting under terrible circumstances.

I further believe Dooley has a pretty good chance to be exactly what we were looking for if we give him the full five years he was hired for if we (especially Hart) get fully behind him. If Dooley is to finish the job, Hart has to come out loud and clear that "Dooley is and will continue to be our coach", fully defending him to put all the "hot seat" talk to bed, or it will kill recruiting. If Hart does not squelch all this talk and unrest, he might as well go ahead and fire Dooley now, because the fan unrest and rumor mill is already at a fever pitch and that will kill this recruiting class making it impossible for Dooley to be successful.

I would disagree with this part of your comment. The last 2 games we had every opportunity on multiple occasions to pack it up and go home, but the kids fought their butts off to keep us in the game and eventually get us in the position, where we had a chance to win. I am upset as to why we have to get ourselves in that big of a hole before we start playing well.

OAN: IF all of this chatter that feelers have been put out is true, I think that if DD can pull the upset over Bama or SC and continue by winning out the last 4 games, then he is safe for another year. I hope we can pull it off in one of the next 2 games. DD deserves every chance possible...remember he is the one coach that took the chance of coming to our university to resurrect our program. No one else was interested, because of the work that would be involved to turn it around. I don't like the constant mistakes occurring on the field, just like everyone else, but the one thing I am very happy to see is that these kids have finally learned how to fight the whole game, no matter the circumstances. I just wish we would fight the whole game as if we were already down 14 points, instead of waiting until we are down that much before starting to play. There is still a lot of work and improving that needs to be done by this staff, but I would like to have some stability on the Hill and see what they can do with another year (that is unless the wheels fall off again this year). Here's to hoping for an upset in the next 2 weeks. GBO!

Dear Dooley,

I know this is a little awkward for us both. Let's be honest, men don't write men letters. It's weird. Since there's no denying that, here is my weird letter.

You took this job when no one else wanted it, and have represented the University with class. Your witty comments and orange pants are always entertaining, and it is apparent that you despise the ignorance of the local media as much as we do. The off the field image of Tennessee has improved with your introduction of the VFL program and the decrease of embarrassing arrests.

Although the deck was stacked against you with a depleted roster made up of players from two previous coaching staff, you have done a solid job in recruiting, bringing high character recruits and pretty solid talent considering the fact that we have not done much winning lately.

Wins have not come as frequently as we all have hoped. Although, rational minds understand that it has not been exactly an equal playing field, with last year's inexcusable Kentucky debacle a prime example, and I would argue we out-talented Mississippi State this past week. Anyways, you have received a pass from much of the fan base for having to play the meat of the schedule without top talent, or with top talent on crutches and in casts. That brings me to my point...

This year we began to have hope. The roster was maturing into more upperclassmen and we chose to believe that every staff position was upgraded. The hype machine began to run out of control leading up to Florida, and that's not your fault, but the subsequent loss really left a mark on this fragile and fickle fan base. Now, although we do not have quite the talent of the top 5 teams in the SEC, we can see that we are getting closer, and this is encouraging. What is painful, is to watch consistent mistakes, that seem to be correctable, and not understand why this team is not performing up to what seems to be it's high potential.

The Mississippi State game was a perfect example of that. Comical mistakes, and a team that disappeared for long periods of time were both mysterious and disturbing. While some will use the "never beaten a ranked opponent" card on you, some of us realize that this was really the first year you have had a fighting chance. Every opportunity must be seized and capitalized on. To this point, the team has not done that, outside of a valiant effort at Georgia. There are 6 games left in this regular season. Whether it is right or wrong, we as fans have penciled the final four games in as victories... we expect to be able to do that as Tennessee fans. The proof of where this program is heading is found in the next two weeks against Alabama and South Carolina. We need hope. We need you to show that you have what it takes to win in this league. I'm not even saying that there has to be a victory in there, but give us something to believe in, because so far, this season has been flash in the pan and then gone.

I am in your corner, but want what's best for this team. Please prove that it is you and your coaching staff.

What's laughable to me is that everyone responds with "Spurrier was a proven winner." Okay, fine. If Spurrier was a proven winner and it took him 5 years to turn it around, why does Dooley only get 3? Dooley walked into a tougher situation, yet he's expected to have better results than Spurrier.
