Jon Gruden thread (merged)

When Bama threw their money at a coach, they knew what they were getting - a coach that won on their level. A coach that knew how to recruit. You cannot say that about Gruden. Never been a cfb HC, hadnt recruited in 21 years. Risk too great.

Money helps solve problems but relying on money to solve it wont work. Looking at Gruden's body of work, that fits perfectly into "a loser continue to ground your program" thus he was fired. Dont need any of that on our hill.
Kids want to get to the league. Any coach who has succeeded at the highest level, has a distinct advantage over one who hasn't.

Saban doesn't have a SB ring...Spurrier, Richt, Miles. When Jon steps into the living room of a 5* recruit, he's already a big step ahead of the competition...so don't give me any of that "hasn't coached on the college level BS. He said himself when asked about college or NFL propsects...that football is football, and it doesn't really matter.

Grudens mother-n-law lives in Jefferson County and is a long time Vol fan as is her whole family. Met one of my clients today who met with her last week and he asked if Jon had any interest in coaching at UT. Her response was she would love to see it but she says Jon wants to prove he still has it in the NFL. TIFWIW

I know I trust my client and he and I had never spoke about Gruden until today.

The same was said by her when Fulmer was fired. She may be right , but I don't think she knows for sure. We will see. If he is interested in college , it would be painful to see him go somewhere else because Tennessee didn't make a change.

Great catch... was having one of those deju moments when I read that post. Pretty sure it was posted here as well. :good!:

There was a poster on scout back then that said it was a done deal. Then someone who had proof he knew her cleared it up. It was the exact same thing that was said. She would love for him to come to Tennessee , but she thought he wanted to coach in the NFL again. And that may be the case , but he is showing interest in the college game and has said so himself.

Yep... great post!

The last part of your post is what feels different this time around. Previously, he had said and really shown no interest in the college game, IIRC.

All I was trying to do was inform this thread of the news I was told today. My client had no reason to lie or to rehash some info from 4 years ago. His son is a UT grad so yeah they are fans of the Vols as well.

..and there is proof of that in that one article that you posted the link to.

Any info is welcome in this thread. Thanks for posting. :hi:

I'm not even questioning the authenticity of your post or your client's. I'm just agreeing with 2424 that it's quite similar to the earlier period--with the main difference being that Gruden himself has now taken actions and made comments that are encouraging concerning those of us who hope he'll be the next coach of the Vols.

Thanks for posting! :hi:

What continues to be overlooked THIS time around is that:

1) We have a new AD...one who came from a program that is reaping the benefits of hiring a big splash HC

2) The program is now much more attractive than it was 3-4yrs ago. You have a BIG, experienced OL, laden with NFL talent. NFL talent in Bray, JH and CP, probably coming back. A defense with lots more size and talent on the DL, and more committed.

The table is set for the next coach if Dooley doesn't get things turned around in a hurry.

3) Brand spanking new facilities...this can recruit a coach as well as a blue chip HS prospect. If you've ever been by the Titans facility...there is no comparison. It's a shoe closet compared to the new castle the UT program has.

4) He can rebuild his coaching rep at UT and leave for the NFL, if he chooses to, on his own terms.

Well-stated... and all true! :hi:

What I was told earlier was that it pretty much doesn't matter what he does because of the agreement for the next guy.

That's a plan centered on a big splash hire.

And, also, let's face it... we won't start winning all these games against ranked teams all of a sudden.

A more likely scenario is that our team takes so many loses in the next 4 games, that they play without enough emotion to beat either Vandy or Mizzo... and who can take Kentucky for granted after last years' debacle?

There are some really ugly potential outcomes to the current season that favor inking a big splash hire as soon as an agreement can be reached.

Agreement has already been made behind the scenes. Nothing will come out until the end of the month unless we get blown out the next two games. Even then it's still not likely until after USCe.

Not sure who that guy is, but there seems to be a lot of smoke..Maybe it's wishful smoke, maybe not..I'm willing to take the risk...Taking a risk is a lot better than sitting around and hoping Dooley gets things turned around.

That's all quite sensible, imo. But, if we lose to MSU, rumors with just a tad of evidence about said splash couldn't hurt much, because neither Saban nor Spurrier will let their players look past the Vols the way the Dawgs did last weekend.

Yeah... but we need wishful thinking with the month we're about to have. :hi:

Let me get an opinion from you people in this thread. Would you not love to see Dooley run the table , or at least beat Bama? I have said it once and I will say it again. I want to win them all. Just because I want Gruden to replace Dooley , doesn't mean I am hoping we will lose. I haven't seen any of you say that. Someone in another thread is saying that is the same thing as wanting to lose. I'd love to win all the games we play and keep Dooley because he would have proven he could win. Finally. Is this not the same opinion of most of you? You want to win , you just don't see it happening because we have been given no reason to believe he can get it done. Opinions please.

Some on another site are saying he could win the rest of them and still lose his job. I doubt that's true though.

I'm with you. I want to win every game and for Dooley to secure his job status.

Have a feeling we're gonna have a long month...Wouldn't surprise me if we went 0-October.:ermm:

Those cowbells are loud... and it really comes down to that game. They can play physically as well. So, if we lose that one... 0-for-October is almost a certainty.

That'd leave us with 3 losses to ranked opponents and amazing stats from the Troy game, going into Mizzo and, if we beaten up physically, we could lose that one.

After that, morale is probably at an all-time low for UT, leaving Vandy who will be ready and Kentucky who beat us last year.

I'm not saying we'll lose the balance minus Troy, but I can't rule that out based on what I've seen from Dooley thus far.

That is exactly my opinion..It's unfortunate that others perceive us as wanting them to lose just so Dooley will get fired...Don't worry about what they think..It just rolls right off of me.:twocents:

I think most of us see the change coming. But I just don't see how people can say , if you want Gruden to be our coach , you must want us to lose. I have never and will never pull against Tennessee. I just don't think we can win the big games left on the schedule. I would love nothing more than to be proven wrong.

yes... I'd love to see Dooley win every game he plays as the Vols coach. Beating Bama would be an extraordinary uplifting experience.

But, I can separate my emotional desire from my rational thought.
