Gretzky was in his prime with the trade, no?
He had just won the Stanley Cup for the fourth time in five years and finished second in the MVP vote -- after winning it the previous seven years in a row. (He won it again the next year in LA.) He was still in the middle of what was probably the greatest run of any player in professional team sports, and he got traded to what was basically an expansion team.
