I was just looking at they tied the #5 team in the nation at a neutral site, tied the #3 team in the nation on the road, and lost by 5 to the #1 team in the nation at home. And then apparently laid an egg against 'Bama in Neyland.

Anyone know how good that team was? Did they play to their potential? Considering I was...9...I don't remember anything.

They were good. They lost Chuck Webb in the 2nd game against Pacific, but Tony Thompson played lights out and was all-SEC, maybe all american. Also they beat Virginia in the Sugar Bowl (Va believe it or not was ranked 1st for a good portion of the season until they lost in November). The ND game was a barnburner that really came down to the last play when Andy Kelly underthrew Alvin Harper or Carl Pickens (I think it was Harper but might have been Pickens).

They laid the egg at home versus bammer when they had a long field goal attempt blocked and bammer kicked the winner at the end of the game. UT was way better than the cheating tide.

Had a chance to win the first game of the season in Anaheim versus Colorado but Webb was making a long rush down field but did not get out of bounds in time and the game ended.

And the 90 Florida game was awesome, UT boat raced 'em in the 2nd half. The tight end even threw a touchdown pass in the game.

Also kind of choked down a tie at Auburn. UT dominated the game but let Aubie come back and tie. Late UT field goal attempt was missed, and Aubie felt like they "won".

Didn't Colorado win the national champ. that yr. They finished a lot higher than 9, but Auburn was not that good; they didn't finish anywhere near no. 5. We had a 17 pt. lead in the 4th qu. I was there; it sucked big time.

I was also 9, but I was at the Notre Dame game, section X that day (before we moved). Kelly launched an epic comeback before that heartwrenching pick in the endzone to end the game. Aside from the Bama game, we were straight up nasty. And this team reminds me a lot of that team in terms of it's position in Vol footbal history.

This team reminds me more of the 85 team; prolific passing game with very exciting QB's, with not the best running game, and a ball hawking D.

It was harper.

No, is was Pickens. Nov 14, 1990 as I recall. Fulmer was the OC and called the eaxact same pass play like 3-4 times in a row. Notre Dame safety finally saw it enough to pick it off. Pickens was very critical of Fulmer post-game. He .was the dude with the 'tude

They were fun to watch! Majors had a good staff and we were loaded with heart and talent. It was my freshman year so everything was awesome!! GBO!!!

That Bama game was horrible. It was such a disappointment. We should have beat them by 3 touchdowns.

they were very good. The bama game was a typical Majors pucker coupled with a blocked FG that bounced about 50yds backwards

Longest drive home I ever made from Knoxville to Winchester. Majors had them playing tight tight tight. Bama had nothing that year. Stallings first as I recall. They were bad. It was 6-6 and we got in position to kick the winning field goal with less than a minute to go. Fricking Antonio London from Tullahoma TN blocked it and it rolled down the field 30-40 yards. Next thing you know, they kicked the field goal and we lost 9-6. I can still hear Bama fans signing that 'we just beat the h*ll out of you' song. That was a long long long drive home. We stopped at Waffle House outside Chattanooga at about 2:00 in the morning. I cried into my scattered smothered and covered omlet.

It was Harper. We beat Auburn everywhere but the scoreboard, didn't show up against Bama, and smacked Florida 45-3 I believe.

Ok, it might have been Harper and Pickens was the decoy. I just recall we ran the same play atthe end 3-4 times in a row. Pickens was very critical of Fulmer post-game.

Agree with that assessment. Air Tennessee with Tony Robinson, Tim McGee, Eric Swanson, and crew and Chris White led the nation in INTs.

Didn't Colorado win the national champ. that yr.

They split the national title, and it was total BS. They lost a game AND tied another AND had the 5th down game that basically needs to count as a loss AND had the BS penalty save them in the Orange Bowl. Meanwhile, Georgia Tech went undefeated and barely managed a share of the national title.

The fact that Colorado got a share of the title is undoubtedly the biggest travesty of college football in the last 25 year, and there is no shortage of travesties in the sport.

(Grew up a Georgia Tech fan, so it's a natural reaction for me:thumbsup:)

I remember everything from that season. We really were 4 plays away from playing for a national title. That team was loaded with talent, just didn't make a few key plays when we needed to.

The tie to Auburn may of been worse than the loss to Bama. We were up 19-3 at the half and just steam rolling them, then Johnny went into his 2nd half shell.

I think Tech had a tie too didn't they?
