If a coach is on the "hot seat" what are the odds that he'll get off of it?

I'm just curious about this. Historically, once coaches reach that "hot seat" status, are the odds fairly against them that they'll ever overcome it?

I'm not saying I'm hoping Dooley fails. On the contrary I hope the guy has all the success in the world here at UT. I'm just curious to know what his odds are. Historically, are the odds against him?

Depends. Most of the time, when a coach is on the "hot seat", he can save himself and grant a reprieve for a year, or even a few, but most of the time, he's pretty much done. To permanently (and I do use that word loosely) get off, a coach has to usually see a major improvement or a championship of some sort in a big hurry.

Richt was technically on the hot seat last year, he bought himself another year or two. But in reality, all coaches are on a hot seat, because no coach is really safe. Some seats are just hotter than others.

But, with Dooley, he could win 9 this year and be here another year or two. But, if he doesn't win 9-10 the next then the hot seat talks will just come back. Any bad season usually lands you close.

Hot seat is a relative term. In reality, they're all on it. Guys like Mack Brown and Gene Chizik won national titles after being on the hot seat. It's mostly a fan creation.

I think if anybody can, it will be Dooley. He is in a good position to make a comeback with the talent he has this year and he has hit rock bottom already losing to Kentucky. I hope he gets it done, but I think NC State and Florida are must wins.

Mark Richt was on the hot seat last year when UGA started 0-2. He's fine now. Still think he underachieves personally with the talent he has, but that's JMO.

Eh, Richt has been on the hot seat for what's seemed like the last 3 or 4 seasons.

Mark Richt is on the hot set in the same way Fulmer was in about 2003. Some fans were sideways, but nobody that mattered.

Yes, it is a fan and media creation. It gives the media wags something to talk about. I really don't believe DD is on Hart's hot seat, yet. He is the one who counts.

??? Gene Chizik won a national championship in his second year at Auburn? How was he on the hot seat?

Auburn fans wanted his ass gone before he even stepped off the plane to introduce himself as their new head coach.

Then again, a 5-19 record at his previous school didn't exactly cause much optimism either.

Winning cures all

This...
The "________ is on the hot seat". is thrown out by some in the media to have something to say. It is their opinion.

In reality basically every coach in on the hot seat in todays game at major university. It is now win or be gone.

With Dooley, I wonder if recruiting well has increased the heat of his seat? We have a lot of talent this year, and a lot coming back next year, so we look like a stable situation and would probably be attractive to a high profile coach. That would have to increase out cachet with recruits as well. It just looks like a perfect storm for CDD if the season goes poorly.

Mind you, I'm in favor of loyalty, and I like CDD. But my opinion so seldom matters.

I dont' think it would matter honestly. If CDD hadn't recruited well, he would still be held responsible for NOT bringing in the talent we need to compete. In truth, I think recruiting is partly why Fulmer went down hill. We had some terribly overrated recruiting classes and there some years we were ranked really low in recruiting. Personally I do believe that great talent overcomes mediocre coaching more than great coaching overcomes mediocre talent. You HAVE to have the horses!!

Les Miles did it, but I think the LSU fans are one bad season away from putting him back on the hot seat or even giving him the boot.

50/50. Wins, he's off. Loses.......hmmmmm, i'll change that to 100%. I say he's off the Hot Seat either way after this season.

Losing season....he's gone.

Winning season......he's off the seat.

Yep 100% off either way.

He does underachieve with the talent he has & the talent that's in his backyard. Imagine if Tenn was a recruiting hotbed like GA is.

Do you think if he wins 7 games he's off the "hot seat?"

Yes.

Not because I think 7 games would be good, but because I think that if he at least has a winning season, he will be kept for stability sake. I guess he could still be on the hotseat, but he won't be gone.

My prediction......
losing season = gone.
9+ wins = here and no hotseat.
7-8 wins = here for another year for stability and let's see if he continues improving.

Let's say CDD wins somewhere between 7-9 games this year. And then Bray, Da'Rick, Hunter, Patterson, along with a few other juniors go out early for the draft, not to mention the seniors he loses like Lathers and Rivera. What do you think that does for the 2013 season in terms of Dooley's chance for success? What would be the expectation for 2013 if we do lose all of those players?

Being on the hot seat quicker is the price for having coaching salaries escalate as much as they have. Big bucks, big expectations. A HS head coach could have delivered a 5-7 season last year. Ask Notre Dame and Gerry Faust.

That being said I think CDD woke up and will have an excellent season this fall. The assistant coaching staff is really good IMO. CDD took care of getting a good roster. I think the winds are blowing for smoother sailing. But he will be only one bad season away from the hot seat again - like all of them in his profession.
