First, Happy Fourth of July, and a heartfelt thank you to Seventh and all of our brave servicemen and women. May those fighting abroad make a safe journey home.

Now, the reason I was inspired to post this thread. I was talking to a young lady today who told me she "hates" the military. My first thought was she was confused and mixing up our military with politics. On asking her this, she replied no, she hates the military. She said it wasn't about politics, it was the military. At once, I felt confused and deeply pissed off. Confused because I couldn't figure out how or why someone could hate the men and women who serve our country. Pissed off because I have no patience for ignorant people who have no idea what sacrifice is and what exactly our military does to guarantee our freedoms. I remained civil and didn't give into my urge to curse profusely, but sensing my animosity at her opinion, she made a hasty exit, which was probably for the best.

I can understand being against politics and fighting certain wars, but I cannot understand being against the men and women who sacrifice and serve this country. This young lady seemed to think that because our military is made up of volunteers, that made them somehow culpable in the wars she disagreed with. Is it me, or is that a completely ridiculous point of view? We have a military because we have to be able to defend our country. People voluntarily enlist to serve their country. There are many reasons one may enlist, but at the end of the day, by volunteering for duty, they insure that no one be drafted and they choose to make a sacrifice so others do not have to. The military does not get to choose the wars they fight. Politicians make those choices. There is no refusing orders, unless of course you want a military state. Perhaps it is a narrow way of thinking, but to me, if you cannot appreciate and support our fighting men and women, then I feel you should get the hell out of this country. And I know that goes against the American way of free speech, but it is because of these brave souls we have those freedoms.

Sorry I'm ranting but this truly pissed me off. And I know I could have posted this in the pub or the politics forum, but I chose the zone because most of the posters I respect the most are zoners. Sorry if it's a little serious for here, but it's a serious issue to me. I have no problem with hating on politics or disagreeing with opposing religions or most differing views on any other subject, but the military as an institution is sacred to me and I take deep offense at people seeing it as somehow evil. It's several hours later and I'm still fuming about it.

Anyway, enough of the ranting. The arguement did make me think of our servicemen and women, especially those in hostile territory, and it gave me the urge for a shout out.

Seventh, I hope you and your brethren make it home safe. I have the utmost respect for what you guys do. Some Americans may not get it, but some of us do. No matter what others may think, you guys are heroes to me. :salute:
