He could have been previously "caught" and charges filed at a later time. It doesn't necessarily mean that he was caught red handed today.

He probably bought something that was stolen and thought he could get away with it.

Maybe he was told to turn himself in? Why would it take so long , unless he just took some new stuff. If what was said about the parents , maybe this was part of the deal? Wishful thinking probably.

Apparently, a parent was not satisfied with the internal punishment, apologies, and agreement to make things right that stemmed from the allegations last month and elected to press charges when they came to campus last week to assist their son in moving out for the semester.
