Tennessee Volunteers coach Derek Dooley sees upswing | timesfreepress.com

"We're still not where we need to be in a lot of positions, but we're much more settled than we've ever been," Dooley said during his 30-minute interview with the Times Free Press. "We have a lot more competition at every position than we've ever had. We have a lot more experience than we've ever had.

"I think you look at the offensive line as sort of a microcosm of where we were and where we are. When I got here, they had a combined three starts, and now they have a combined 99 starts going into the season. That's going to give you a chance, a much better chance, to go out there and compete."

OK - So now Dooley and Company need to coach them up! Although the running games looks somewhat improved, I still didn't see a good push from the 1st team O-line on running plays.

I for one am really excited about the season. It's the first time I've been optimistic about the upcoming Vols season in a while. We have pretty good depth at MOST positions and we have no excuse to be bad offensively this year. With an experienced line we should be able to run the ball much better and I think adding Coach Graham and Coach Pittman will play huge dividends for us.

We have studs at QB and WR and I can't wait to see the offense.

I'm worried more about the defense only because I'm unsure of it. I hope Coach Sunseri has the guys ready to go and that we will fly around and make plays.

All in all, I'm ready to see the Vols hit the field.

GO VOLS!!

You define a set of values that you're not going to compromise, and every day, every decision you make [is about] staying consistent within that realm," Dooley explained. "I think I've done a better job of that because ... I felt like I was probably guilty of making too many excuses because of our youth and feeling like we're putting too much on them. That was where I probably failed the team more than any way [-- by making] too many excuses for them, because we just put them in a situation with that much youth out there trying to carry the load.

Dooley's a negavol and Dooley hater. Go figure...

We WILL compete for the east if we stay healthy.

Dooley identifies the areas that are still the biggest question marks:

Dooley admitted the team still has holes. He's concerned about his kickers and the lack of "experience and a lot of production" along the defensive line, at cornerback and at running back.

Those are four really key areas where we have got to at least be average in the league if we want to have a big year. If I was going to rank those four positions on how worried I am about them:

1. Kicking/Punting
2. Running Back
3. D-Line
4. Corners

Dooley is filling the holes, but it is going to take another year or 2 of recruiting to shore up the 4 above positions.

I too am excited and optimistic. We should be in the running for the East this year. However, I hope our fans don't underestimate the growing pains of switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4. Unfortunately, we didn't have the personnel to make the switch earlier. It would have been nice to have all our growing pains at the same time.

Yeah we definitely aren't stacked at all areas like the Bama's and LSU's of the league. I worry that we are going to lose all of our studs (Bray, Hunter, Rogers, and Patterson) after this year if they have the years that I hope they have. That being said, I hope those other WR's we have coming in are really good bc I feel like if we had those studs for another year after this one it would give us time to add even more depth to our weaker areas and we really would be handful...but Dooley has done a great job recruiting and I hope we win this year and it allows him to stay on board and continue to right the ship.

GO VOLS!!!

really? wow, i think that is the same time period I heard last year and the year before. He has this year, if not his next excuse will be the graduation or nfl taking his players and starting over.

Where are all the people who say CDD never takes any blame? Where are all the people who say CDD always makes excuses?

He has made significant improvement on the roster from the day he was hired.

I don't think the improvement to the roster is what has given fans such a sharp tongue when it comes to Dooley....it's the lack of improvement on the field.

Fair or unfair, its from where most of the criticism comes.....

Starting his third year and he refers to that many holes. Not a good sign.

A clear division in personality types, I guess...

Type 1:

I was broke three years ago, and now I only have $10,000 in the bank.

Type 2:

I was broke three years ago, and now I have $10,000 in the bank!

People are free to choose.
