Coach Martin vs. Coach Dooley (merged)

if we beat vandy and seed 2 or 3 in the sec tournement and win some games yes

That's a huge IF...but possible. The thing is, if we lose to Vandy and miss the tournament it is still going to be amazing what Martin has done this year.

This is ridiculous. I love Martin. My jury is out on Dooley but I think he can be successful. To compare football and basketball is a total joke. In basketball, if you have one good (Maymon) player, one great (Stokes) player, and a 5 role players (Tatum, McBee, Golden, etc) you can be successful. This is exactly where BasketVols are currently.

In football, if you have one good player, one great player, and a bunch of role players, you win 1 SEC game. You need a handful of good, a handful of great, and 60 role players.

Thus, it's a h3ll of a lot easier to overachieve in basketball quickly. In football, that is next to impossible. Dooley has had a chance to build his roster. Now we get a chance to see if he can win.

Comparing Dooley and Martin is the stupidest thing I've read in a long time. Let's be thrilled with Martin for what he is doing, and leave the football team out of it.

this +100

They didn't get hurt. They left the team early when Bruce was fired. You may remember Harris and Hopson?

Both were gone anyway, get over yourself. Comparing the two is ridic. CCM is a proven winner and dooley has yet to prove anything, but comparing coaches in different sports doesnt make sense. But thanks for bringing so much great info to the board.

Where did I compare the 2 sports? I was comparing 2 coaches. One coach has a proven winner as a coach and one has a proven record as a loser.
Both were hired into turmoil. One coach has been successful and one has continued to flounder and lose.

I still have a lot of doubts about Dooley but its amazing how some people have very negative opinions and cause me to want to defend him. Please stop, its very hard to defend him because there's not a lot of reasons to believe he's going to turn things around. IMO, people like volbeef make it hard to point out all the reasons why one would doubt Dooley. Call it blind faith if you want to but Dooley has this year to remove all the doubts. Im 100% behind Dooley until he proves me wrong again. This is a new year, over all a new staff, and im going into this season with a good attitude. Hope it lasts.

People just sit around and think "How can I turn this into a shot at Dooley?". He will be our coach next year. You can support the team or you can get on message boards and cry like a b**ch! Either way, the Vols will play football next season with Dooley on the sideline. I'm sure some of you losers who call yourselves Vol fans will be pulling for us to lose just so you can say you were right. That's sad.

Why do you say that? I can be happy with how the Vols are playing basketball but realize they are not a good team even though they may be good for Tennessee. Do you think we will be among the 65 teams selected for the NCAA?

Dont know about 65 but maybe 68.

If you want to see what a good coach does all you have to do is look at our basketball coach. The team he coaches gets better as the year goes on. Dooley and his worshipers just make excuses.

You were comparing 2 coaches who happen to coach two different sports. Point to a single football coach who has taken a football team from TERRIBLE to pretty good in one season and you might have a better argument.

And when did we move to the best basketball conference in the nation?

Good point. By all accounts the SEC in basketball this year is Kentucky and then everyone else. From the games I have watched the talent disparity is frightening. Sure there are some decent teams in the SEC this year, and UT is one of them.

But, UT men's team lost to Austin Peay, College of Charleston and Oakland but beat Florida and Uconn. Those losses are so bad it would be like if Dooley lost to Montana, Buffallo, and MTSU but beat Florida and LSU.

I don't think the fans would have been so forgiving to the football team. I think that Martin is a great coach, but he looks better because the basketball teams expectations were historically low (picked 11th in the SEC). Even though UT was picked mid to bottom in the pre season football polls, before the injuries, the expectations on Dooley after the previous season were much higher.

Also, one of the greatest freshman in the country joined the basketball team in December. Dooley had his two best players injured early in the year, and noone showed up mid season to start to play as a difference maker.

Apples to oranges, indeed.

I would have replied to this post earlier but for some reason, the OP's message was blocked. Must have something to do with that ignore button?

Eh, not impressed in the least in Dooley thus far but the comparison is kind of ignorant. The more mud that gets slung from both sides on Dooley the dumber the whole fan base looks, JMO.

We may seriously be the most self destructive fan base in the country. GREAT win by the boys last night, and within twelve hours we get two absurd posts. First, we get Nehi's post talking about how much he misses BP, followed by this disaster. Why can't we just enjoy the win and wait til FB season for further judgement on DD?
