For all the people who want Peyton Manning as our OC, could he be a good recruiter? I was too young to ever watch him. I don't think he would be. I don't buy the fact that people would come just for namesake. Maybe the quarterbacks, but then again maybe that's all he would recruit. Comments?

Would you want to come play football for possibly the best offensive mind ever to play the game?

...I wouldn't either

It was a simple question about his recruiting ability. I'm not saying kids wouldn't want to play for him. I wouldn't doubt his mind, just his recruiting ability.

I'm curious as to what you think it takes to be a good recruiter.

I find it difficult to believe that a highly intelligent person with tremendous work ethic and worldwide name recognition would not be able to recruit.

It absolutely blows my mind that there are really people that believe an all time great/hall of famer will return to his alma mater to be an assistant coach.

A people person. He just doesn't seem like the type of person you could go up to on the street and have a casual conversation with.

Harbaugh went to WKU as an asst for 7 years after his NFL career - i know he was not as good as peyton but still a big time name who went to a much less renowned school than UT as an asst - if you want to get into coaching you gotta start somewhere - you tend to move up much faster but you gotta start somewhere

I'd think it be more likely he would be an NFL assistant but it does happen that NFL guys start as college assistants

Don Shula not as recent but he was an asst at UK and UVA when starting out his coaching career

Herm Edwards also started as an asst at san diego state

Harbaugh, Shula and Herm, none of them were all time great players. Harbaugh is from a family of coaches, its in his blood. When being referred to as players, they dont deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as Peyton.

**edit** and Peyton doesnt deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence with them when being referred to as coaches.

Peyton would be a hell of a recruiter. His name alone would get players. He understands defense and offense, not to mention he's very personable.

Its well known Peyton has a HUGE football IQ. Definitely knows offenses and how to pick apart defenses, thats not the question. When did Peyton ever say he wanted to be a coach? When it was rumored Ole Miss wanted him back in November, all he said was, "tell them I'm 0-10 as an assistant with the Colts." If he's involved with football after he retires, it will probably be as an owner or front office job. As its been said before, great players usually make horrible coaches.

I've never talked to Peyton but his personality seems like he would be very easy to talk to and get along with. Dont really get why the OP thinks he wouldnt be.
