I think Bruce should be making in the neigborhood of $1.4 to $1.6 million, with better postseason incentives. That puts him behind Tubby Smith and Billy Donovan, the only coaches (I believe) have a better track record in terms of postseason accomplishments.
Note: I still think that Pearl is a better coach than those two. His head-to-head record against them is 2-2 (Tubby) and 3-1 (Donovan).
Note 2: While Gottfried has more postseason appearances than Bruce, he's only gotten to the Sweet 16 (and beyond to the Elite 8) one time.
If Tennessee is a serious contender for the SEC title, I'm satisfied on an annual basis. An SEC title every 4 or 5 years is reasonable. I couldn't care less about division titles. Bottom line, the only year we've been as good or better than everyone in the conference since 1999 is 2001. That's unacceptable.
I think these benchmarks allow for the parity (mostly a bs arguement) that everyone is so high on these days, but it makes a clear point that UT should never...ever be outmatched against the better teams in the conference.
Why is it a BS argument? The parity in the SEC is at an all time high, I don't see anyone going undefeated from the SEC for a long time.....I mean look at the coaches....There are big names everywhere more so than any other BCS conference by far...
Parity has nothing to do with the fact that several programs in this conference are leaving UT in the dust. That's a function of the poor job being done by the coaches. Further, Arkansas being significantly better than Tennessee is conclusive evidence of a major problem. Why is it a BS argument? Parity is only acheived when the top dog is complacent and/or they are simply outworked. For all the talk about an SEC team not going undefeated, I would argue that if Steve Spurrier was coaching the kind of talent LSU had last year, no one in the conference would have gotten within 10 points of beating them.

There are still only two elite teams in the conference at one time. Last year they were Florida and LSU.
In the 90's they were Florida and UT, and even then we decided to lose to Memphis. I guess parity applied back then as well?
