Why? From all the arguments I have heard, I haven't heard one good reason why Manning deserved it more.

Woodson ranked like 44th in the nation in kick return yards, wasn't in the top 50 in receptions or yards.

If you want to argue that Peyton didn't deserve it, you would have a better arguement if Randy Moss had won it instead of Woodson...

Not really. Woodson was the best cornerback and defensive player in a while, and he did what his team needed in every way and carried them to the National Title.

because Manning was the best football player in the country. End of story.

Not only that, but the year Peyton got robbed, they claimed that the Heisman was not an award that awarded career accomplisments, but who was the best overall player that particular year. OK... fine, then explain to me why Ricky Williams wins the next year based solely on a career accomplishment? Did texas win their "Big Game" of that season?

Woodson didn't get it for career accomplishments. He got it because he was the best player in 1997.

how many UM games or UT games do you remember from 97? I bet all you've seen are (ESPN) highlights and the arguments are coming from Big10 fans.

Actually, I remember Michigan Penn State that year, Michigan OSU and his stellar performance, and the Rose Bowl for Michigan.

But the UT bowl game was past my bedtime.

You for got the most important stat. Woodson was the best shutdown corner. That doesn't go in the statbook, but it is hard to ignore that.

so he matched up against 1 guy while a QB goes against the whole D.

He returned a punt and stuck the Heisman pose. Wow. Ginn should have gotten 2 years in a row if returning a punt on your big rival is the only factor

But I thought Woodson was such a good return man. Guess his stats can't back that up. 1st Team All-American at DB, certainly, but to give this guy the Heisman is a joke. The award is traditionally given to the player on a good team with the best stats, not the best player on the best team (see Johnny Majors losing the Heisman to a ND player on a losing team. Don't think Notre Dame even played in a bowl game that year.

Manning was the best QB, impossible to ignore that. Woodson was the best player on the best team, not the most outstanding.
