At this point, if I were on the Selection Committee...

I would advocate putting the last 20 candidates for the final 10 at large spots in a hat and having a random drawing. Last year, the committe made several dubious inclusions into the field, most notably Air Force and Utah State, as well as the most egregious exclusion of all time, Cincinnati. This year, absent putting Clemson in the brackets, there is no way they can make those types of glaring mistakes. For example, everyone knows my personal favoritism towards Texas Tech and Kansas State. However, after watching their game today, I would not be able to work up much outrage if either, or both, are excluded. Further, there are teams that everyone is assuming are in that wouldn't have a compelling complaint if they were relegated to the NIT. Case in point, Arizona. Other than a home floor win over Memphis and some success against Oregon, what have they done to merit being assured a spot? Anyone who misses the tournament this year has nobody to blame but themselves.

If you give the various team's you mentioned RPIs any weight

2007 NCAA Men's Basketball RPI

RPI Team
13...Arizona
25...Air Force
36...Clemson
40...Texas Tech
59...Kansas State
65...Utah State

Arizona and Air Force are a given.
Clemson and Texas Tech are on the bubble and in.
Kansas State and Utah State are out.

Interesting to note that as of Monday UT was #7 in RPI. That was about where UT was last year when UT got a #2 seed.

My comments about Air Force and Utah State related to their being in the field last year. As far as the RPI, I think the computers used in its calculation, as well as the technodweebs who came up with it, should be smashed with sledgehammers then ground into a fine powder. Any measurement that can be used to say Arizona is the 13th best team in the country is a steaming pile of buffalo feces. There are 6 teams better than them in their own conference.

I have to agree. When they played Memphis they looked like a pretty good team. Was that smoke and mirrors, Lute's coaching or what?

They've got talent. On a given night, they look terrific. However, they are beyond inconsistent. Memphis would run them off the floor if they played tomorrow.

Sounds like coaching to me. Is Lute over the hill?

Xavier's loss just knocked somebody off the bubble. All at large hopefuls better root for BYU and UNLV in the games I'm attending tonight.

In the interest of full disclosure, I must admit Lute is one of my 2 or 3 least favorite coaches of all time. That said, I do believe his best days are behind him.

I would say that reminds me of the Vols this season, but the Vols are quite consistent. Play well/win at home, play poorly/lose away from home.

I'm not a Lute Olson fan by any stretch of the imagination but give the man his due

Lute Olson - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Is one of only five head coaches in NCAA history to record 26 or more 20-win seasons
Owns second best winning percentage in Pac-10 history (290-84, .775)
Has more Pac 10 wins than any other coach in history (316), including John Wooden
Led Arizona to four NCAA Final Four appearances (1988, '94, '97, 2001) and one NCAA Championship (1997)
Arizona's 23 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances is the longest current streak in college basketball and is second longest in NCAA history (behind North Carolina's 27)
His 45 NCAA tournament wins are second most among active coaches; fourth all-time
His 26 tournament appearances are second most among active coaches; third all-time
Is 25-10 in his last 35 NCAA Tournament appearances
Arizona's 1997 NCAA championship team was the first and only team in history to beat three No. 1 seeds in the same tournament
Guided Arizona to 11 NCAA Sweet 16 appearances in the last 18 years

they have a ton of athletic ability and lord over a weak conference. That's not their fault.

I don't think they have the same record playing in the CUSA of a couple years ago.

I take some solace in our 18 point victory over Memphis in Knoxville back in December.

Hat, i asked early in the season, but I'll ask again. Does the CAA get two teams in? and if so, who's the second team?

Given the way things have gone the last couple of days, I think a legitimate case can be made that Old Dominion and Drexel should both be in the field. Drexel did what the committee always tallks about, they went on the road and won. ODU got G'Town. If at least one of them, probably Drexel, doesn't get in, somethings wrong. In Bubble Suicide Watch, BYU just won. That means Wyoming now has no chance to poach a bid by winning the MWC.
