Celebration penalty on TD costs Cathedral High School team title - ESPN Boston

The 18-year-old senior was racing for a score as time wound down in the game against Blue Hills. Video shows Owens briefly raising his left arm and then lowering it as he approaches the end zone. The penalty nullified the touchdown, and Cathedral lost the game 16-14.

The MIAA statement Wednesday said a lesson could be learned from the situation.

"Losing a game or having an official's call go against you or your team are all part of sports. Just like athletes and coaches, officials try hard to do the best job possible. Athletes must learn to put these things behind them and move forward. During their lifetime they will experience similar situations where they feel 'wronged' by a superior or authority figure and they must learn to deal with that situation."

What a joke. Not only is losing the game because you raised your arm garbage, but they justify it by saying these kids need to learn that they'll be screwed over later in life. Wtf??? Maybe they will be screwed over in the future but that's the worst logic and justification I've ever heard. "It's okay to screw them over because it will prepare them to deal with being screwed over in the future". Disgusting

Props to the kids for moving on. I'd be furious if I were them. I'm upset just reading the story. Apparently it was the kids birthday who scored the go ahead touchdown too. God forbid he raises his arm while he won the state championship on his birthday.

I don't like the new NCAA rule but high school that is stupid especially for a state championship. If they did that in any NCAA National Champ just for lifting an arm it should be over ruled. If he did a X or throat slash maybe but come on. Ref should be forced to swallow his whistle.

Heard this on the radio on the way home from work. Stupid rule needs to go away. Sports and the people who play them have emotions and should have the right to express them. I'd sue the league for violating my inherent right to the pursuit of happiness.

I really like skip, but come on now =/
The guy "Skip" is probably the least likable commentator I have ever seen on ESPN.

And aren't these excessive celebration penalties supposed to be enforced on the ensuing play? The penalty is complete ****. It was a minor celebration on the game winning TD in the State Championship. The referee who threw the game must've had some motives to do so. What a dick. Head ump should be banned.

In NCAA, touchdowns can now be taken off the board for excessive celebration. See lsu's punter faking and running one in earlier this season.

Letting referees determine what is and what is not excessive celebration. What could possibly go wrong?

Charles Barkley was on Dan Patrick the other day and told Dan he was forever indebted to him because he doesn't have to listen to that a$%hole Skip Bayless anymore. My thoughts exactly.

Lord forbid we allow players to show any emotion during the game. Just really one of the dumbest things I've ever seen.

Raising his arm was celebrating? Maybe he had a question? Maybe he was checking wind direction? Maybe he was seeing if his deodorant was working?

Pathetic call.

they should just ban "excitement & fun" from all sporting events

Let's ban the crowd from cheering too while we're at it.
