As a white liberal running in a majority African American district, Tennessee Democrat Stephen I. Cohen made a novel pledge on the campaign trail last year: If elected, he would seek to become the first white member of the Congressional Black Caucus.

Now that he's a freshman in Congress, Cohen has changed his plans. He said he has dropped his bid after several current and former caucus members made it clear to him that whites need not apply.

what would happen if someone started

The Congressional white Caucus

???

Would the aim be to oppress non-white people? No? Then go ahead and start it.

Is the Congressional Black Caucus meant to oppress white people? No?

no, but it is meant to be separate. The purpose of the Congress is to propose and enact legislation that benefits all US citizens (you know, that pesky "general welfare" thing). By separating themselves into a distinct group, the CBC puts their skin color ahead of any other consideration.

Uh oh, GS, you might have some competition. His forte is slightly darker than your Arabs.

There is a difference between an organization of historically oppressed and disadvantaged minorities that collectively work to promote causes that help out their constituency versus one created by the oppressors to continue it.

I realize that the majority, and those particularly antagonistic towards the minority groups, would want to oversimplify and claim that if one is "racist" then the other is, too, but that really does not account properly for the distinction between them.

How can the blacks are disadvantaged card be played anymore. Especially with things such as affirmative action. I feel like they are TN after the LSU game. Were we given a raw deal? Maybe, but complaining about it 150 years after the fact is counter productive. Its people like you that keep race relations where they are. Race doesn't matter, but if some minorities are to ever rise above the curse of poverty they've got to stop blaming the past and white people.

You think that economic opportunity and advantage is truly equal "150 years later"?

If so, you are just plain stupid.

That's the same stupid reasoning as, "Why isn't there a White Entertainment Network TV station?"

You ever been told you couldn't ride the same bus as someone else because of your skin color? Were you ever forced to eat in a different section of a restaurant because of your skin color? Were you told you couldn't go to the same school as everyone else because of your skin color?

Can you provide a link giving the range of time in the history of the US where, as a white person, you were a minority and discriminated against?

Case closed

Yes I do. Exhibit A: Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Samuel L. Jackson, Herman Cain

Please educate me about what is not equal anymore and how these people above started out poor or middle class and rose to where they are now.

No. But I can show you where I was passed up for a large scholarship given to a black person with inferior test scores.

Maybe they are scared allowing an outsider will prevent them from conspiring to invent lies like "The T-partyers called us 'n*****' at least 19 times".

The overwhelming number of black children void of the typical nuclear family as opposed to whites.

You pull out a few isolated instances and expect people to take you seriously?

Of course it's much better now for minorities, but to suggest the playing field is level is remarkably naive at best and blatantly stupid at worst
