Latest rankings by USN&WR show NW 14, VU 18, UM 24. Michigan is a good school, and one of the best public schools in the country.

It is not as selective in it's students as Vandy or Northwestern. It is certainly not as selective regarding the academic standards of its student athletes as Vandy (I am not as familiar with the academic requirements at Northwestern for athletes, which is why I qualified them in my original post.)
Point is that big 10 has 2 schools up there in the rankings, one of them a football power. SEC ain't got another to hang alongside VU. ACC's got a few stout academic schools that figure out how to compete.

Competing in the ACC is not an accomplishment. Vandy could have made a serious run last year. Besides, Michigan doesn't have higher standards for their athletes, so it doesn't matter how great their academics are. Even if it did, USC is a pretty good school and they destroy the Wolverines every time they clash.

it all cycles my friend. how about 2 years ago. can VU compete with Duke hoops (and Duke's just a tad better school than VU)

VU would wipe the field with Duke in football. I bet Vandy has tougher standards for its athletes than Duke does.

Duke USED to be respectable in football when Spurrier was there. They even had a undefeated season. I have no clue what happened..lol

again, I give you Carl Woods. did I mention Duke football?

I just don't think we want to hold the SEC up as a bastion of academic excellence. I can't think of many conferences that we would outdo.

The article and every post following it seemed to focus pretty exclusively on football.

I'm not saying anyone would outdo anyone. I don't think you can really say a conference like the Big 10 is any better than the SEC academically, or that their academics are a valid excuse for any athletic inferiority.

I'm not allowing them any excuses for academic inferiority. There are none. They are never going to recruit enugh speed to the North to compete year in and year out with the SEC. That's the difference, despite all of the garbage about academics.

Nonetheless, I think the SEC is rife with academic problems, shenanigans and otherwise. Doesn't make it true, just my gut feel. I just wish schools would start paying a fixed stipend and call the players semi pros and move on. It's a mercenary transaction that way. We pay the players to wear the jersey and try to provide them with an education if they're willing to make an effort. If they're not, they can hope to go pro and risk getting no education while it is available free. Not really very different than today.

Again, I doubt it's any worse than the Big 10. When our players don't make their grades, they don't play in the bowl game (Bret Smith). When Buckeye players don't make grades, they start in the national championship (Maurice Clarett). That's just one example. There are some probably shady things that happen on both ends.

none of the power conferences are any worse than the others. I just wish we could get the NCAA over this "student-athlete" joke, and make it more mercenary, like the pros.

If you look through older threads, this idea has been thoroughly discussed. There were a lot of good points in favor and against.

if you're calling me a newbie, you're right and you win.

Not at all. Simply trying to provide you with more information. I don't care how long you've been on the site, that doesn't say anything about your knowledge or intelligence.

I'm kidding. I am a newbie and am not privy to any of the older info on here.

Thinkin' about it, I might be better off.
