Penn State scandal (merged)

No word on Mcqueary, but Gov. Tom Corbett has called a press conference for 8:30pm tonight. Likely announcing that President Spanier is gone, possible announcing that Paterno is fired.

For those of piling on, had this not come out, would you argue against Paterno being a pretty good guy?

Or is all this name calling and verbal/typed abuse long stemmed hatred towards a 1000year old football coach that started under the Truman Administration?

Just clarifying.

For me, my anger stems because Paterno has touted doing the right for so long and now that this comes out and it appears he did nothing to stop it, he looks like a fraud.

You can't go around and tout your "goodness" and bury your head in the sand about allegations this serious. That totally removes the great man label he had for me.

I'm sure the students parents will understand. That gives them more timte to transfer their kids to a decent school. UT has some spots open.

you can't be serious. Penn State has one of the best Academic reputations in the country. Corruption in the football program doesn't change the academic reputation.

Exactly. The entire administration being fired really reflects well on the university. Quality stuff as usual, volstyle.

Two things:

Why do you assume that Paterno trusted the GA?

Why is Paterno at fault for reporting to the AD who then reported it to Shultz (who oversaw the Penn State Police Department)?

The AD and Shultz are the ones who lied about this and never moved forward, respectively.

because it corroborated what most folks tied to the program already knew and he had already been investigated for same.

He is absolutely at fault for failure to follow up when he saw nothing happening.

Passing the buck is hardly all we should expect of the head of the program.

Governor Corbett wasn't at the Trustee meeting tonight per ESPN. I'd be surprised if he announces Paterno is fired and the President is gone without being at the meeting, but who knows? He's obviously having a press conference for some reason.

If you don't think their entire school's reputation is in the crapper, you're a complete idiot, but that wouldn't be inconsistent with what I already thought about you.

Yup . you're right, no one will ever choose to go to Penn State again.

They will lose all academic credibility. All alumni from Joe Pa's 61 years will be forced to burn their diplomas bc they hold no further value. School should be shut down imo.

you don't have much logic to be a law student. maybe you should stick to that blog of yours!

There's one coach on staff who accused a former coach of assraping a child in the locker room. Both of them are apparently walking around the football facilities all the time. What kind of organization does that happen in?

I don't care how much anyone wants to pretend that Paterno had his head in the sand about it. McQueary saw Sandusky. Sandusky saw McQueary. And yet they were both together for the next decade, part of the same football program. That's screwed up. That's the organization our Great Man was running.

This post says it all....

There is no defense about Paterno not knowing.... If anyone has read the Grand Jury testimony Paterno testified in January. Along with the AD. From all reports Sandusky has been around the program using the weight room and facilites up until as late as last week. There is no excuse. They turned their backs on the children this monster took advantage of. They knew what the man had done but chose to do nothing. They knew the man was going to be charged but still didn't ban him from being around the program. It is unbelievable. Paterno thought he was untouchable and I think this says all anyone needs to know about the true character of the man. It is sickening....

If he coaches Saturday I will lose all respect for Penn St. The fans seem to support him even now. I can't understand that. I know he gave alot to that place. He gave his life to that place. But there are certain things that are just right and wrong, good and evil, how you could defend someone who turned his back on children being sexually abused is sickening. Anyone who could allow that man to lead young men should be ran off the same as him. If Penn St doesn't do something the Big 10 should if not them the NCAA. He needs to go..... NOW!

I'd say him failing to notify the authorities that his buddy, the serial child ass raper, was caught raping a kid in the shower might possibly be a reason people are upset. Couple that with the fact that he continued to let the raper use the facility to rape tons more kids, and I think that might be what some are taking issue with. Just clarifying.

Couldn't have said it better

That's a meaningless question. After 50 years of Paterno talking about integrity and doing the right thing, we finally found out whether he means it when his reputation is on the line. That's what he should be judged on, not the decades of public platitudes.

"When you hear that someone in your organization is raping a child, do you find out whether it's true and take action to stop it?" is a pretty damn simple test. And Paterno failed it.

U.S. Rep. Patrick Meehan said he’s asking Education Secretary Arne Duncan to look into whether Penn State violated the Clery Act, which requires colleges and universities to prepare, publish and distribute an annual security report disclosing all criminal offenses reported to campus security or local police.

I guess you didn't know that some of their alumni actuall did burn their diplomas.

Volstyle, I'm actually not just picking on you. If any institution is forced to fire their entire administration over their handling of child rapes that went on during their watch, it absolutely tarnishes their reputation. It doesn't matter if it's Harvard or Pellissippi State.

He's doing exactly what he should be doing. Kudos to him for appointing a neutral person to investigate this mess. That's what I thought he should do all along.

Local news said he was going, maybe he's calling in.

I have no clue how the Penn State fans are defending anyone on that staff. He knew what happened in 02 and he still let Sandusky hang around the program and not only that but bring young kids to practice. Kids he sexually abused. That is what the Victims say in the Grand Jury testimony. McCerray was still on the staff. I mean what happened is unacceptable. Not only for a football coach but for any human being. If you know someone is hurting children and do nothing to stop it. You enable. Paterno let him use his program to entice children he had to at the very least suspect it. How to you not run this guy off at the least? There is no excuse for Penn St fans who defend him. There is no defense.... None....

The Clery Act requires all colleges and universities that participate in federal financial aid programs to keep and disclose information about crime on and near their respective campuses. Compliance is monitored by the United States Department of Education, which can impose civil penalties, up to $27,500 per violation, against institutions for each infraction and can suspend institutions from participating in federal student financial aid programs.

This could be financially devastating for Penn State
