I'm arguing that this idea that we grade QB's on their ability to win titles is silly. If the QB were THE determinant of game outcomes, the team with the best QB would win every game and that is simply not how it works. Great players, in every sport at every position, get shackled to sorry teams and don't win titles, but it in no way diminishes their ability as a player to perform their job as well as or better than everyone else.

ok, fine. that sounds more rational than your previous post. i don't necessarily buy in to the have to have a ring to be great theory either, but it can't go unmentioned that the majority of the great ones do win titles. NO one though is going to confuse Trent Dilfer with Dan Marino or Dan Fouts.

but at the same time.........playing the what if game about what if this qb played for this team etc.....is useless.

if you want to say Dan Fouts or Dan Marino were great qbs, and were so even w/out the benefit of championship caliber defenses or running games....fine, those are true statements both about the player and the team they played on. saying Montana won a championship only because of the team he played on is not entirely accurate. he did win 4 of them...he had someting to do with it, just as did the rest of those teams.

and like it or not, there is some unwritten law for qb's only that they get judged not only for stats but championships. qb's are different. they are viewed as leaders, both when their teams succeed and when they fail. they get too much credit, a la PM in this Super Bowl or too much blame, also a la Rex Grossman in this past superbowl.

just don't tell me "i'm not sharp" for simply stating the facts..........because in the end, the if and but scenarios DON'T matter. the only thing that matters is what actually happened. and i think most of us are sharp enough to know that there is a difference between the chargers teams Fouts played on and the 49ers teams Montana played on, and it wasn't necessarly the quality of the qb play at the time.:salute:

I get your point and you can't help but acknowledge mine. In the future I will limit my "not sharp" comments to your statements moreso than to you (not really, but it sounds nice).

you mean the Joe M that was too old to play anymore? gimmie a break. if that's your rationale, i'm sorry...i thought i was having a discussion with someone that was capable of rational thought.

next you'll tell me Johnny Unitas was no good because he should have led the chargers to a super bowl victory too. or that Joe Namath should have led the Rams to a super bowl victory.......

how old was Joe M in KC and which of his skills had diminished to the point that he would go from best ever to also ran? C'mon, he was still a great QB in KC, just didn't have enough around him to get it done.

i dunno what it is but i dont revere manning like most tennessee fans....i see his tennessee career as a waste......his senior year he had jamal lewis and travis henry in the backfield to name two......he also had eric parker, cedrick wilson, marcus nash, and peerless price lining up along side him.......of those players only nash is not still in the nfl......cosey coleman and chad clifton werent bad either......not to mention a defense keyed by al wilson and leonard little.......i see his tenure at tennessee as little more than a disappointing blip on the radar........i know its blasphemy.......but at least casey clausen had heart......in the super bowl......there was one play when peyton watched the ball roll around on the turf and did not go for the fumble recovery.......thats not heart......he deserves no super bowl......i'd much rather mcnair have gotten it

I'm on board, not because your argument makes any sense, but because of your hyper-use of the oft forgotten ellipse in lieu of periods (as are the norm). Your willingness to fight the power (grammatically) is overwhelming. The guy doesn't deserve a Super Bowl and McNair.........does.

If their D plays like it did during the regular season, they will again be 'dogs going into next season's playoffs

Defenses usually only give up 100 yard per game. The colts gave up more than twice that many. It probably will not happen again in the history of the NFL.
