The "Occupy" Rallies

Last I checked, the Hollywood actors hadn't f'd up the economy by manipulating the mortgage securities market, or needed a bailout when their gambles failed, or taken bailout money then still paid themselves multi-million bonuses.

Your comparison of Hollywood to Wall Street in this context simply fails at every level.

who took a bailout loan and didn't pay it back, with interest? you know, besides GM and the huge banks, which were created by the regulatory clowns?

What you say is true of most CEOs. Plenty of Hollywood and other entertainers have participated in box office flops and still gotten paid.

Not with bail out money, though. That's the difference and that is at the heart of the rallies.

Its 1) the use of tax dollars paid in by the middle class 2) to help CEOs and finance execs keep their business afloat 3) because they created an economic mess with their greed and 4) they all still got paid and are now getting record bonuses 5) while they sit on huge war chests of cash and demand more hours and productivity of the few middle class people they kept on board 6) because the politicians, both in Congress and the White House 7) not only allow it but helped set it up.

.

what's at the heart of the rallies? Why didn't they happen at the time of the actions of the heartless Wall Street guys who stole everyone's money? Are these people too stupid to strike while the iron's hot? Maybe they felt that a simmering period was in order?

A very tiny percentage of CEOs took bailouts yet the whole group is demonized as overpaid relative to entry-level employees.

You realize there are more companies/industries than the relative handfull of big Wall Street firms right?

Is the difference here the fact that wallstreet execs play with our money while hollywood plays their own? I feel like Hollywood is it's own country.

True for Wall Street at a general level but as has been pointed out - Big Business in general is the target. We are talking about 10s of thousands or 100s of thousands of companies that had nothing to do with the financial situation or bailouts yet are viewed as evil, greedy bastages because of their compensation.

Has to be race related some how...

Dunno. They are saying big money controls govt? They would be right. I wouldn't know where to start dealing with it though.

it is insane to pretend that Wall Street execs play with someone else's money. Those guys have enormous amounts of capital at risk every day.

I guess I was mostly trying to distance the comparison people make between hollywood and wallstreet. Hollywood, in general, has very little impact on our lives.

But those are enormous companies that make exorbitant incomes for meaningless work. How on earth they get a pass as "the rich" is beyond me.

Hollywood is a microcosm of the labor injustices that the left rails against. If the Occupiers truly gave a crap about the 99% they would marching on Hollywood.

There is certainly corruption abound at the top of hollywood, im sure - but I just think most people forget about them because they seemingly operate outside the real world.

come on. The mainstream media ignores them because they're kindred spirits.

ha. I don't care who the media rails against. It's the occupiers concerns we're dealing with, right? At least the thoughtful ones.

but media railing is a large part of this idiotic dance these clowns are doing. All they've done is toss out a bunch of sensational charges about how the rich are screwing the poor by co-opting government and being greedy bastages. It's all old school media fodder.

I still generally agree with the principle. Big business, unions...the whole lot, shouldn't be buying politicians and votes.

I'm sure - buried under all the hipster communist bs - there are real concerns trying to be brought to the forefront. This is my problem with protests - they attract silly hipster young people who have no real world experience who serve to marginalize the movements.

Except Vietnam. The entire movement changed from anti-war into some drug-induced mental retardation. The treatment the soldiers got is arguably the single greatest embarrassment in American history.

I agree with the sentiment too - the buying of politicians is a big problem.

It begs the question though: if government had less involvement in our lives would this problem shrink?

Take two core areas - tax code and regulation; both are characterized by crazy carve outs and incentives to reward some and punish others. This begs for lobbying and influence. Simplify both and the opportunities for crony capitalism shrink.

In the words of a sage - don't hate the player, hate the game.

I have very little faith that any elected official, outside of Ron Paul, really supports less govt.

The OWS is handing out Tee Shirts today that say "Eat Flaming Death Fascist Media Pigs"

Awesome... I will take 2 please

The "media pigs" are actually treating OWS with a sense of legitimacy. That's sort of biting the hand that feeds.

The media certainly takes OWS more seriously than most Americans.
