UK vs. UT

Seriously man I'm pretty fluent in music. I swear i didn't know who the hell Steely Dan was until that one year they won an ass load of Grammy's. Then to find out they were around back when my dad was young. Are they good or what? Compare them to someone a little more main stream.

Whatever you think is the best band, musically, technically, out there. Multiply their talent by 50. And that's getting within a million miles of them.

There is no easy comparison. They suck on a level all their own. Imagine Clay Aiken doing jazz influnced pop. It is that bad.

Saw them once in DC In the 70's. They had a stage that was going around in circles, guess they call it "in the round". Left the place with a spinning headache.. :ill_h4h:

If we can stop dating the merits of Sonny & Cher, I'd like for someone to 'splain to me why everyone seems to think we can't beat UK. I don't care where we play, they happen to be terrible and we have a better shot to beat them on the road than we do anyone else.

Why not. Memphis beat 'em and the Big Orange blasted Memphis. Works for me..

They are much more sedate now, if that helps.

So what were they like a early version of Dave Matthews Band or something? Have that Jazz/Rock/Latin/Fusion flavor, or are they more like a progressive rock trippy 50 minute songs you trip to?

I believe UK beat South Carolina in Columbia by about 40. It would appear that would make the Gamecocks a far more likely road victory.

Sigh? I'm just trying to get the feel man. I like old music because growing up my dad had all the good stuff on record. I don't recall any Steely Dan. I swear I thought they was a new band until I saw pictures of that Grammy night and 2 old guys were holding the hardware.

Flawed logic and always has been. We and Florida both beat MSU on the road by comparable margins, therefore, we are as good as Florida. Just doesn't work.

Point taken. I'm just saying that UK hoops is massively overrated and I think we can beat them there playing the right type of ball.

There is no flaw to the logic that South Carolina is infinitely worse than Kentucky. It is a fact.

Oh come on man. Don't hold back. If you feel for our future is awful because a 20 something doesn't know who Steely Dan is then...well nevermind.

Dude, I'm just joshing with ya'!!!

Steely Dan is made up primarily of two guys, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. They met in college in the late 60's. In their first band was a drummer. You may have heard of him.

Chevy Chase.

But obviously he went a different route. Fagen and Becker were into jazz and blues. They wrote mostly, for bands like Jay and the Americans.

Anyway, they ended up writing and recording and then touring a lot in the 70's and early 80's, then got back together in the 90's.

Some of the songs you may know:

Deacon Blues
Rikki Don't Lose That Number
Do It Again
FM
Peg
Hey Nineteen
Any Major Dude Will Tell You
Black Cow
Black Friday
Aja
Babylon Sisters

Now that you mention it I have heard something about Chevy Chase being a drummer. I saw that on VH1's Pop Up Viedo when he was in that video with Paul Simon ("Call Me Al")

I'll check them out I just wanted to get the flavor. As far as 60's and 70's go I'm down with Zeppelin, Allman Bros., Eagles, Hendrix, Floyd, Santana, CSNY, Doobies, Clapton, King Crimson, Fletwood Mac, Blackfoot, theres many more.

I hate new music for the most part because it's overproduced and most of the time the performers are horrid live. New stuff (which isn't even that new) Tool, RATM, Audioslave, Incubus (older stuff), Sublime.........etc. etc.

Michael McDonald, who of course sang for the Doobie Brothers, sang backup for Steely Dan on the 1978 Aja album.

In fact, last year, when Steely Dan was on tour, they took McDonald with them. He was opening act, then came back on stage to sing some backup.
