Possible HC's after Fulmer

Reguardless of how it happens Fulmer will not be head coach forever. So assuming he leaves within the next few years here are my candidates. Feel free to agree, laugh at or just plain disagree.

John Chavis - Id say strongest candidate, still remains DC and hands the offense over to a top notch OC hopefully. May grate some vol fans who want new blood

Jon Gruden - Vol ties, NFL is by no means a guaranteed gig even for him, takes no sh*t so discipline would be better Superbowl rings help recruit, ask Charlie Weiss

David Cutcliffe - Heir apparent? I dont think so, not as strong a recruiter as Fulmer but better coach, suffers from being one of the old boys just like Cheif

Bobby Petrino - great play caller, recruits just as well as fulmer, loyalty issues would be the biggest concern jumped from UL it seems after constantly denying he was ever interested in other jobs

Bob Stoops - could be possible, brings him closer to home, can attract 5* kids, dont think will get the Gator job soon unless Urban bolts for some reason. Has been to the big game. long shot but would be my pick.

Wild pick Chris Petersen / Bronco Mendenhall
Two of the brightest offensive minds should tennessee want a new direction in offense. Wild long shot outsiders but who knows!

Bob Stoops next move will be to the NFL if there is one, he won't make a lateral move to UT, he already makes more then Fulmer.

Gruden real longshot. I think he could find another HC job in the NFL first.

Chavis being a UT alum which is how UT ended up with Fulmer. I think Hamilton is smart enough to know UT needs new blood.

Peterson would be a great choice. I loved his offense.

What type of coach would Hamilton be more apt to go after? A great defensive coach and bring in a great OC, a great offensive coach and bring in a great DC? Would he want a great recruiter or someone that is good at evaluating? I know we want a guy that can recruit, evaluate, develop, have great defense and great offense, but that isn't likely to happen. Young and energetic? Experienced and stoic? Up and comer? NFL dropout?

for whatever its worth, i like gruden the best of those candidates. i actually heard his name a few weeks ago from a friend of mine in knoxville. one of those 'guess what i heard' deals from 'someone on the inside'. honestly, i hope fulmer takes this class and does what we are all longin' for.......then retires back on top....lol

One thing to remember about Chris Petersen at Boise State: everyone was saying the same things about Dan Hawkins the last two years. How did things go for him at Colorado this year?

Chris Peterson has been Offensive coordinator for about five years there. Is it possible he is the real genius behind the program? When Hawkins got the credit and the jump to Colorado, he was living off of his OC's talent. When he got to Colorado he was exposed. Only time will tell.

I'm not 100% sold on the idea of Gruden but I'd give him a shot. I think the window of opportunity to get Gruden in Knoxville is pretty small and Hamilton is not going to act within that window (kind of like UT probably could've had Butch Davis at the end of last season).

the job. The guy following CPF has to be not only an excellent coach but must be a great recruiter. IMO Gruden wouldn't get the job because too many questions regarding his abilities as a college HC - for instance could he recruit well enough; who knows. Stoops next stop will be to the NFL not to another college job if {and a big if} he ever leaves Oklahoma. The hire of the next UT FB HC is extremely important and a mistake by the administration could bring terrible results for a long, long time.

You know who I honestly think they should offer it to with the understanding that his ONLY jobs are staff administrator and recruiting?

Rodney Garner

Think about it and it will start to make sense. Offer him a million bucks with some incentives and he's ours. Be sure and give him plenty of $$$ to hire top flight coordinators and assistants.

isn't that what UT has now? A staff administrator and head recruiter?

I say, if and when Phil is no longer our coach, no chavis or cutcliffe as head coach..Let's bring in some new blood.

i agree. UNC is a program that has virtually no reason not to be successful. the only hangup is that it's a bball school and only a winner will drum up real support. having said that, i think w/in 3 years Davis will have that program near the top of the ACC.

as for NCSU, they got what they needed. Amato was viewed in large part as a clown and rightfully so. his teams lacked discipline and if you think Fulmer is an excuse maker, go read some of the transcripts from his Monday pressers this year. they are a real peach.

O brien will bring discipline. will he bring BCS and ACC titles? doubtful.

as for candidates for UT....i really like petrino. but now at least that seems to be a non option. i can't see gruden leaving the NFL.

the OC at USC is intriguing.

no one has mentioned paul johnson from Navy. i think he could do pretty well.

the guy from BSU? don't know....1st impression is great, but he inherited a pretty good team there.

the guy from TCU is also intriguing.

one thing is for sure, timing will be of utmost importance. if he got fired today, who realisticaly could be on the sidelines next season? don't know if there is anyone out there, o/t johnson, that really gives me the warm fuzzies.

all things being equal, you have to hand it to Bama and UNC for their timing. Bama had enough patience to wait it out during a few weeks of heave scrutinizing and UNC canned their guy during the season to make sure they got their guy.

don't know if we would be so bold to do either.

Don't look for the OC from USC to be availbale, I read where he's the top candidate for the Raiders job.

The smart move for Fulmer would be to bring someone in as an assistant or coordinator, for a year or two and then turn the reins over.

Look at the success of Bielima at Wisconsin, Alvarez brought him in from Iowa for a year, and then handed it over.

Peyton!!!! Fulmer leads us to NC in 07, Peyton wins Super Bowl this year and next. Decides he wants to go out on top. Retires from Nfl and takes over HC job at UT. Life is good.

while i'd love to see fulmer lead us to the NC in '07, i don't want to see any of those other things happen.

Why would Peyton not be a good coach, maybe he should come in as OC for a short stint first though. Have you ever seen anyone study the game more than Peyton? Plus he would probably be a good recruiter.

I think David Keith should be considered as well! He has been on the sidelines as long as Chavis and Cut!
