Reguardless of how it happens Fulmer will not be head coach forever. So assuming he leaves within the next few years here are my candidates. Feel free to agree, laugh at or just plain disagree.

John Chavis - Id say strongest candidate, still remains DC and hands the offense over to a top notch OC hopefully. May grate some vol fans who want new blood

Jon Gruden - Vol ties, NFL is by no means a guaranteed gig even for him, takes no sh*t so discipline would be better Superbowl rings help recruit, ask Charlie Weiss

David Cutcliffe - Heir apparent? I dont think so, not as strong a recruiter as Fulmer but better coach, suffers from being one of the old boys just like Cheif

Bobby Petrino - great play caller, recruits just as well as fulmer, loyalty issues would be the biggest concern jumped from UL it seems after constantly denying he was ever interested in other jobs

Bob Stoops - could be possible, brings him closer to home, can attract 5* kids, dont think will get the Gator job soon unless Urban bolts for some reason. Has been to the big game. long shot but would be my pick.

Wild pick Chris Petersen / Bronco Mendenhall
Two of the brightest offensive minds should tennessee want a new direction in offense. Wild long shot outsiders but who knows!

I'd like to see Peterson and Mendenhall have more than 1 season of great success before I consider them a great candidate. Neither of them have even HALF of the roster as their players.

As for me, Gary Patterson is a guy I'd enjoy having. 54-20 in 6 seasons at TCU while lining up victories over BCS conference teams, including Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Louisville, and Iowa State.

This is a great question. Just pretend you're the Tennessee AD and the UT boosters have come to you with a blank check and said "fix it or leave"

What would you do?....not only head coach but staff?

Since so many people seem to think Saban is the second coming, maybe the answer is to just double whatever 'Bama offers although I personally want someone that will stick with us for 10 years or even if they are wildly successful.

I think Cut might do good things if hired. He did considerably well at Ole Miss for a bit. With the prestige that UT has, I think he'd fare much better than he did at Miss.

However, I would be concerned that he might be too "old school" for the SEC as a HC. We might fare better with some young "gun slinger" that'll shake things up a bit in Knoxville.

Uh, Mendenhall's background is defense. He was the DC at BYU and New Mexico before becoming the head coach for the Cougars.

I'm not sure Chavis wants to be a head coach anywhere. Plus if the job were to open up and it was offered to David Cutcliffe before Chavis, if I were Chavis I'd be pissed and leave.

How the hell you know so much about coaches kills me. Off topic, I want to know what you think of the George o Leary and will he make UCF a success? He seems like an a##

Information on coaches isn't a secret knowledge. Usually on Univesity websites they have info on the coaches and their whole resume up until they were employed.

Like the link below:

Bronco Mendenhall, Head Coach

Edit: He doesn't look like he's 40 years old either.

As an Orlando resident, I think that program is on the move. They are building their own stadium and they have a student body population larger than the big three of UF, FSU, and UM. Its not that the size of the student body has a direct relationship to success, its that the larger the student body the more money you have coming in, the larger your alumni base as time wears on, etc.

It will be awhile, but they will eventually be competitive.

Might not be under O'Leary, though. This could take 10-15 years.

Drive through UCF campus on my way home and see all the contruction. Agree 100% with your assessment.

22 minutes is more than enough time.

Not questioning that he knew that just saying 22 minutes more than enough time to look something up.

O'Leary will do well because he's a good football coach. That said, he's never going to win any personality contests.

Why not Major Applewhite? :p

I'm sure he's got his eye on the Texas job in the long run.

Speaking of coahes think the new guys at UNC and NCState will do anything worth talking about in the next 4 seasons?

(We play NCState in 2008)

I'm pretty confident Butch Davis will do just fine.

Depending on how much longer the Fulmer tenure lasts, that may be a far more viable possibility than you think.

Hey Hat. Can you give quick summary on why you think highly of Applegate? Know he doing some coaching work but hadn't seen anything about how he was doing.

tks

If Harbaugh came here he might have to deal with Peyton Manning taking his job for a 2nd time.
