Actually, Metal Gear was born on the Sony MSX2 in Japan and ported to the NES.

Who knows? I doubt it. Snake has always been the guy, except for MGS2. This game supposedly takes place before MGS4. The developers wanted to make a game where you cut anything. Raiden and his sword was the obvious choice.
