What Vols Must Do To Win In 2007

We need some big hogmollies on the dline. Harrel, Henderson, Haynesworth types at DT. O and a run stopping SS would help.

1. Give Coker 25 touches a game, Hardesty 5, Arian 5.
2. Utilize Brad Cottam
3. Find a fullback [see incoming recruit from Chattanooga. He's a beast]
4. Continued improvement in Special Teams (At least 3 blocked kicks and 2 TD returns).
5. An overall increase in aggressiveness (take chances on 4th and short, blitz like they stole something, go for the jugular when you have a team down, creativity in formations and schemes). I want us to win or lose by leaving it all on the field.
6. Know the difference between asserting our gameplan and adjusting to the other team.
7. Bring back the pride of Tennessee. Let's know our tradition and play with some heart. Hold team meetings to listen to Chuck Webb, Peyton, Inky, Andy Kelly, and other greats.
8. Work as hard this offseason as Trooper and the WR crops did last year.
9. Play in front of 107,000 loud, rowdy, wild, passionate fans EVERY SINGLE GAME. Make the old timers see how they are taking our great home field advantage and making it a moot point.
10. Play smart football. After contact, wrap up the ball with both arms. Play the 2 minute warning well - Getting out-of-bounds, don't waste timeouts, line up quickly. No stupid penalties. If you can't get pressure, fill a pass lane and get your hands up. Know when to run north-south and east-west. Hardesty, know that more than 2 jukes is useless. Block to the whistle.

Guys, this stuff really isn't that hard. I know we are playing good competition and games are tough. But, we should do everything on this list every game.

If we do, we are looking good.

Wonders late in the season? Wonders against Penn State? I think Ainge has maxed out.

The coaches don"t have the balls to do what Bill Parsells did when this year he benched that chunk of concrete...Drew Bledsoe!

We're 4 wins better this year, and Ainge didn't drop two fumbles that led to 10 points.

But only 2 fewer losses. Break down the improvement in Ainge from the Cal game until the Penn State game?

well w/ a pass only offense, gamefilm showed how to slow UT down. Ainge's technique and game decisions were very good throughout the year IMO. biggest improvement i saw was being able to throw it deep out of bounds when he had no play. he kept the game within his ability.

You know as well as I do that he was superb until he sprained his ankle. After that he was still OK.

I do not think you can win now in college football with a statue as a QB (witness the two teams paying for the NC). I like Ainge, but the defenses are now are too good with their blitz packages. Remembet the play that beat us in the Florida game? It was the huge intentional grounding loss of yardage on our final drive. Why? Because of an inelusive QB!

Crompton will be in his third year next year. He is our best hope. Do I think the coaches will heed my advice.....nope. Look for next year to be the same as this year with Ainge going down with an injury.

Not really. It doesn't matter how elusive the QB is if the offensive lineman misses an assignment and lets defenders through untouched.

Didn't Leinart just win a championship 2 years ago? He wasn't very mobile either.

I think THE improvement we all are desperately hoping for NEEDS to come in the trenches. This isn't some great insight of mine, but obvious to all of us. IF our O and D lines can improve and return to the types of lines we BIG ORANGE faithful are used to, the points about moving Ainge as the starter (see Peyton Manning-Vols 94-97 and Colts 98-Present) and the "Running Back Problem" are moot points at best. Any one of those three tailbacks can be ALL SEC at worst with good line play-we all know that. I don't have a quick answer, BUT it seems to me we are fine at the skill positions for at least the next two years aside a cover corner or two and a big play WR (PLEASE stay Meach). My suggestion is recruit all the big time Hog-mollie talent you can, maybe sign a couple JUCO guys and make those guys work like hell to get tough. I remember vividly being able to run the ISO and off tackle AT WILL and shutting tailbacks down and killing QB's with guys like TT Kelley, Corey Terry, Henderson, Darwin Walker, Haynesworth, Leonard Little, Mahelona for cryin out loud, and the list goes on and on. WHY ARE WE SO THIN ON OUR FRIGGIN" LINES????? Please help me figure this out, brothers. I am sick and tired of gettin pushed around!!!!:ill_h4h: LOL

look at his decison making in games, there 's a dramatic improvement in his progressions, and look at Meachem, he set the career recieving mark..

But remember thee play against ND that got them in the BCS championship....his roll out dive over the top winning TD as time expired? Ainge could have never don that!

so not wanting to start a separate argument, but is peyton the reason we didn't win a championship in 97?

You mean the play where Reggie Bush pushed him into the end zone?

Hey, i love a mobile qb too...i don't really know what to say there bro. lol

nah, there's nothing really to say there. you're previous post answered the real problem. the lines. they're atrocious.

Are you talking about last year? He didn't even score on the roll out dive, he fumbled the ball out of bounds. He scored on a QB sneak after being pushed into the endzone by Reggie Bush. Even Ainge can do that.

The O-line problems go back several years to when we went to that zone blocking crap. It may take another year or two to fix that. The only thing I can figure out on the D-line is that injuries mixed with suspensions, busts and non-qualifers has just depleted that position into oblivion.

one last gripe fellow men:
please tell me the last time the loss of a guy like Harrell made THAT much of a dadgum difference in our d-line play. with all our Vol knowledge, surely we can think of a star goin down on the d-line that didn't absolutely tank us the rest of the year on the interior. most of the time the opposite happens for us, am i right? A guy steps up. i dunno, i know he was awesome for us, but come on, we should be deeper than that.

For the D-line to improve, Bolden has to keep improving like he did towards the end of the season.

Mapu has to hit the weight room hard during the offseason. That should make a huge difference in his play, because he just didn't have enough strength to play DT.

It also wouldn't hurt if some young guys came in and immediately contributed.
