How can this be a mistake?

No. I'm saying that from my perspective it is so clearly inappropriate that I struggle understanding how he made the mistake.

Clearly, there are others who do not view it as racial. But I truly believe that even if you don't you ought to realize that enough people do that calling a black person a tar baby is incredibly dumb.

Being from TN I have heard the term used as a racial slur.

I have also heard it used in the manor in which he claims.

If he would have used "tarry" would we still be assuming what he really meant?

You know Disney destroyed The Song of the South from its vault? You can get it from Chinese pirates still.
You can get it on youtube as well...

Perhaps all GOP congressmen should simply refer to Obama as "The Negro in the White House" so LG doesn't have to try so hard to find examples of supposed racial bias

The only people who would view that as a racial comment are those who are always looking for it. Its ridiculous to think he was laying down a racial comment.

I'm not necessarily saying he consciously used the phrase intending to use a racial epithet against the President. I've asked how it can be a mistake to use a phrase so obviously offensive to many.

Seems to me that the explanations are:

1) Intentionally racist. Highly unlikely.
2) He did not know the phrase is viewed as racist. Possible, but unlikely.
3) He didn't intend to publicly make a racial comment and the phrase slipped out, betraying what he might call the President or think of the President behind closed doors. Very possible.
4) It was a "slip of the tongue" in the sense that he was trying to come up with a way to describe the situation and that phrase came to mind, and his internal filter had momentarily taken a nap. Also possible.

I eat fried chicken at Bojangles. Is that racist?

There used to be a Sambo's restaurant in Maryville. It was a national chain decorated up like the children's book Little Black Sambo. I was really young but remember I liked the place.

Given the topic.
We should conclude if "frying" chicken is more racist than eating the fried chicken.

I vote for the fryer.

I thought he was referring to the oil spill not racist at all.
